Peter Pan? What's it about?

Digital is a data technology that uses discrete (discontinuous) values and can be used to store various information. It's basically a way to store information (like a story) without needing an actual physical container (like a book).

Oh, it's my favorite book. Has been since childhood, you know? It's about a boy who never grows up and he has all these exciting adventures! Read it! It's the best!

[A few pen taps.]

... I'm not sure I follow.

I'll look into it.

Uh, just imagine seeing words in mid-air.

You'll like it!!

... Like floating words? But how is that possible?! And this exists where you're from? That's amazing!

I'll let you know if I do.

Through [He wants to put "digital technology", but that went over the person's head the last time.] magic. And yes, it does.

Magic?! MAGIC!! Wait, really? Hey, could you show me?

[Oh. This isn't going to be simple after all.]

I don't really have the equipment to show you...

[Nope. Claire doesn't do simple, see?]

Then just tell me about it!

[Sigh, fine. He'll explain it in simple terms, and by simple, cutting a lot of the tech terms out.]

A typical device that uses digital technology looks like this:

[There is a small drawing of a connection gear (i.e., a portable computer in the Xenosaga world that looks like 1/2 of a PlayStation controller--see here for reference).]

You turn it on, and the words come up like so:

[Now there are one drawing of a person holding a connection gear and another drawing of the same person with the connection gear, only with a visible square with words in front of them. There is an arrow between the two drawings to show progression of events.]

Does that make sense?

...... What a strange looking device. Are you sure this exists? It looks awesome! It just floats in the air? What is it, light? Why doesn't it just, you know, go through the air?

But otherwise, I guess it makes sort of sense.

sorry! notifs sucking. falseblack October 13 2011, 03:40:29 UTC
Yes, I'm sure.

[Just pretend Nigredo answered all of Claire's questions using scientific terms that were invented 4000 years into the future because I don't think canon ever really delved too deeply into the technology, sob. Oh, his answers are also probably like two pages long.]

I'm glad. That's about as simple as I could make it.

fjalskh IT IS OKAY. Also... lmao, editing b/c my brain is dead guhhh train_tracer October 13 2011, 10:16:14 UTC
[......

Well. You can bet Claire didn't really understand any of those explanations at all and will probably chalk it up to 'magic,' anyway. Or ask Firo to explain it because he unfortunately happens to be a friend

So much effort put into writing this. And he doesn't understand a word!]

Ohhh... so that's magic. I didn't know you could explain in so many words and in so much detail! That's AWESOME!!! A pity it couldn't be brought here, though. But wow, something like this exists!!

falseblack October 13 2011, 18:46:55 UTC
Yeah... It could be brought here; I would just need the right materials to recreate it.

train_tracer October 15 2011, 04:12:28 UTC
Really?! Could you do that then? I'd really want to see it work! What kind of materials would you need?

[Also, Nigredo's previous two responses (the two pages of explanation plus the note before the reply with the explanation) are gone and tacked to another part of the board over here]

[...Oh, what the hell. Maybe he'll get lucky.]

I could. I'll just need the following materials:

[Have a list, Claire, except there are a lot of materials that have only been discovered 4000 years into the future in the vast reaches of space. Good luck finding those, man.]
