Day 53: Breakfast

Nov 21, 2010 08:08

With sigh that toed the ambiguous no-mans-land between soft and explosive, Yuffie collected a plateful of waffles with all the toppings. She was sure that, if nothing else, it'd making a pretty satisfying splat if-when?-she launched it at somebody's face, and that was all that counted ( Read more... )

Izaya was in the mind to avoid, avoid, avoid.

He'd already mentally packed away last night by the time the nurse arrived to escort him to breakfast, but he didn't particularly want to see anyone at the moment-or, at least, anyone from back home. No Kida, no Celty, and especially no Shizuo.

Nevertheless, he found his gaze wandering as soon as he entered the cafeteria. He spotted Celty first and stopped walking, and then spotted Shizuo and forced himself to look away. There were much better things to look at: with all the humans here, there had to be especially interesting ones among them!

"Joshua?" the nurse repeated, trying to get his attention. "Mr. Takahashi!"

He turned to her with a thin smile. "Yes, yes; sorry! I'm coming," he said, skipping a few steps to catch up with her. She took him to the counter, supervising while he took his waffles, and then allowed him to find a table on his own-though she issued a warning that she didn't want to see him sitting near a 'Mr. Peace'.

Izaya took a seat near the door.

Kaworu didn't feel awake until he sat. The sudden demand for coordination was what finally pulled him from the empty space that his mind had remained in since he had awoken. He had seen familiar faces as he was moved through the cafeteria, but when he observed them, he didn't call upon his emotions. He knew they still stirred something in him, though. Involuntarily he would respond, unable to escape associations and connections. That was why he knew that it was a relief to see Shinji. It was a relief to see Soryu. They bound him to this world, even as he ignored it. It would create more difficulties, but Kaworu was grateful for it all the same ( ... )

Izaya had made it a third of the way through his waffles, idly observing the masses all the while, when a nurse brought another patient over to join him. He gave the woman a pleasant smile as she set a tray down in front of the pale-haired young man, and it lingered even after she left.

Izaya took a drink of water as the youth opened his mouth and introduced himself.

"No, we haven't," Izaya agreed, committing Kaworu's name to memory. He gave a polite nod. "Orihara Izaya. A pleasure to meet you, Kaworu-kun."

The nurse who'd brought Kaworu over had, apparently, wanted them to get to know each other, so Izaya decided to ask the opening question now that introductions had been made, "Have you been here long?"

It was far too early to say whether or not Kaworu would prove to be particularly interesting, but the fact that he was here in front of Izaya now held interest enough: a chance to observe one of the crowd up close instead of from a distance.
