All in all, the Doctor had been pretty lucky... from the looks of things. Maybe sneaking out of the cafeteria hadn't gone as well as he hoped it would have-he would have preferred to be further away before they'd been caught, or better yet: not been caught at all. But the soldier that had apprehended the Doctor and Brainiac 5 had let them out of the cafeteria (not that he'd probably had much choice, come to think of it) until the 'all clear' had been issued, and then they were marched off to the field to line up for a roll call.

So far there had been a lot of waiting, and a lot of unfamiliar names for familiar people. He was fairly sure he heard Brainiac 5 respond to Blake, Michael.

"Smith, James."

But in any case, judging from the state of the men lined up on the field, it was a lucky thing they hadn't still been in the cafeteria. Even without having gone back in himself, he'd seen what the others looked like when they'd been brought out.

"Smith, John."

He hadn't heard Smith, James answer-hadn't been paying much attention to ( ... )
