Day 54: Lunch

Jan 25, 2011 01:07

All things considered, last shift had been pretty low key. After this morning's disaster, though, that was perfectly fine by Claude. Some fresh air and a chance to make sure Guy and Okita were all right weren't things to take for granted. It was also good to have a fairly normal, conversation with Guy that didn't slip off into awkward territory ( Read more... )

The Doctor was hoping for a quiet lunch.

It wasn't for his own sake-personally, he wouldn't have minded another opportunity to sneak out and, hopefully, make it further than he had this morning. Escaping the gas had been a fortunate enough end to the adventure (though he would have preferred to have not been caught at all), but another food fight or the like over lunch could lead to a second incident with the gas. After this morning, he didn't quite want to spend his afternoon checking up on Donna a second time.

On a more positive note, lunch was fish and chips. It was obviously a weekly thing around here-all the meals seemed to be rotated weekly, come to think of it-and while it wasn't as good as he would have gotten in London, it was welcome all the same. He took a large portion, with an extra helping of chips, before looking for a seat ( ... )

The Doctor had just barely started on his portion of chips before he a familiar voice called his name. He looked up immediately, a smile spreading across his face when he saw who it was.

"England!" he greeted, gesturing for the man to have a seat. "Or- do you prefer 'Arthur'? It's been a few days since I've seen you! Alright?"

He paused, taking a moment to pick up another chip with his fork. "Come to think of it, you've been here a full week now, haven't you?" He seemed to recall that Arthur had said he'd only just arrived when they'd met, they last time the cafeteria had served fish and chips.

England, then. The preference had been duly noted and tucked away.

The Doctor frowned at the mention of this morning. "Were you still in here at the end of it?" he asked. He gave a brief pause before adding, "I managed to get out before the gas, myself, but I caught the gist of what happened. It seems rather... extreme for stopping a food fight."

Then again, between the soldiers about today and the gassing of the cafeteria, any pretense of being friendly and normal the hospital may have once clung to was being steadily whittled away. Maybe extreme methods were actually less unusual than he'd thought, and he simply hadn't seen them implemented before now.

"And I agree: every day here is a day too long."

Ooh, Japan! How fascinating! "There's-ah... Japan is here too?"

England had mentioned an America before (called him a brat, too), but this one he hadn't heard mentioned before-especially not in conjunction with being here in the hospital. The Doctor wondered if any others of England's fellow nation-folk had been brought here, or if it was just the two of them. He'd have to try to find this 'Japan' later to say hello, maybe have a chat...

He may have gotten sidetracked by the mention of Japan, but it only took a moment for him to remember that England had commented on the hospital dropping its pretence. England might have been surprised to hear what a real hospital might do, in this or any era. "Well... No matter what century it is, the gas was completely unnecessary. But I agree: it does look like they're dropping pretence."

The Doctor popped the chip on his fork into his mouth, chewing it thoughtfully. "What year is it for you-back home?"

The Doctor had intended to tell England about what was going on in... well, England in his home time (2008, he'd said?), but the idea was all but forgotten at the thought that there were more walking, talking nations around here. More than just the two, even!

"Really?" he asked with considerable interest, making a mental note of the name 'Honda Kiku'. "How many of you are here-in total? Do you think there's any reason for it? I've a mate from before that arrived around the same time as me, but just the one; I wonder if you lot were singled out in particular..."

Of course, that led to other questions, including what the purpose of anyone being here in the first place might have been. The military that had shown up might have been a start for finding that answer, but it had created almost as many new questions as he'd already had. "If Landel's not the top of the, well... the 'food chain' here, it makes me wonder who is... and what he's up to."

-Doesn't count?

The Doctor almost asked about that point, but it must have been a matter of perception; by 2008, the country that had been Prussia had long since become a part of Germany. Interesting, though, that 'Prussia' and 'Germany' had been called brothers; he wondered if it a kind of formality-due to proximity or a root heritage-or if there were actual family structures among those people.

Of more importance than his curiosity about families (or the lack thereof) amongst the nations was why they were here, and England's thoughts about it.

"Your governments and people can carry on without you there to... represent," he said, a rising note of question accompanying the last word. "Well, that's what I assume. Are you actively involved in the goings-on of your country?"

Of all the nations on Earth, just seven who were-or had been-here was a small figure. Geographically, they seemed too spread out, too random, to have a connection there; there was a wide-ranging Eurasian contingent, of course, but also the majority of North ( ... )
