Night 54: Main Hallway, 1-West

The big connecting corridor. He may be in a rush, but this hallway deserved extra caution. What would he do if he tried to get to Stefan and ended up mauled on the way there? The first night when he'd smelled blood here, it was still a bit... haunting. It meant there was a chance of something lurking, dragon or not ( Read more... )

Indy was walking normally again for the most part when he reached the main hallway, although his stubbed toe still stung. No one else was here.

As usual, he moved nearer to the wall to wait and to check his surroundings with the flashlight. Until it started flickering, at least. Indy smacked it repeatedly against his palm. The light continued to flash on and off and finally, when he stopped hitting it, to go dark altogether. He sighed the sigh of the martyr and opened it up. The batteries could be dead--or not. No way to tell. How long had it been since he'd changed them? He couldn't remember.

Whatever the answer, the flashlight was useless now. He put it back together and wedged it into the unoccupied jacket pocket. Hopefully nothing would try to eat him before someone else got here with some illumination.

Normally it was pretty easy to find Jones when they met up at night, though this time it took Harvey a bit longer because for some reason, the other man didn't have his light on. It was the hat that ended up helping him to spot him, at which point he headed right over and took a quick look around to make sure that there wasn't anyone else waiting with the man.

No, it seemed that it was just the two of them for now. No surprise there, really.

"Hey," he greeted. "How's the arm?" The question was asked somewhat tentatively, but it seemed that he couldn't completely let it go. He was sure that Jones would know why he'd made a point of asking when he wasn't one to show concern in most cases, but it didn't matter. Hopefully the other man was smart enough to not comment on it.

"And who else are we waiting on?" Asking another, more pertinent question to make sure that the subject didn't linger on burn wounds was definitely the best course of action here.

Dent was on time, as usual. As usual, Pilgrim was late.

"All right," Indy replied, shifting the arm slightly to demonstrate its range of movement and trying not to wince. The bandages hadn't been changed since the night before; maybe the nurses were all too cowed by the soldiers to engage in actual nursing. He regretted now not having made a bigger point of bringing it up to his nurse earlier. ("His nurse"--actually, Indy realized, if she had a name, he couldn't ever having heard it.)

Dent asked his next question almost in the same breath, which was fine with Indy--he'd rather not dwell on his injuries. "Scott Pilgrim--the loud fellow from the Sun Room, one of the two who was--you remember," he explained, then added, "And someone he called 'the Ringmaster.'"

Indy shrugged to show he didn't have a clue about that one either and shifted topics again. "Hell of a day, wasn't it?"

The main hall was doing its nightly dance-hall duty, without so much as a chaperone in sight. So much for under new management. Scott was a no-show so far, so he started checking out the wallflowers ( ... )

The answer Jones gave along with that small show of movement was all that Harvey wanted from him as a response, and so he was relieved that they were able to move on. It didn't seem like the other man was in terrible pain, which either meant that the burns weren't too bad or Jones was just used to getting injured. That seemed reasonable enough to assume considering he was an archaeologist; then again, he was also a professor ( ... )

Speak of the devil. "Dr. Indiana Jones," Indy said, leaning in slightly to peer at the ring. It was a silver band of material he couldn't identify in the dim light, with an oval-shaped red stone. The man himself ("Sangamon"?) was a couple inches shorter than Indy himself, long blond hair, goatee, waist overalls. He looked like he might fit right in with Sex Bomb-ob.

Indy straightened up. "Most of my bad days here don't involve getting tear gassed by an unidentifiable military squad." He left the dry commentary at that, though; Taylor's answer was much more important. But where the hell was Pilgrim?

If no-one got pissed off, the patients weren't doing their job right. The tear gas had smelled of satisfaction. Between the retching and the excruciating pain, but it had been worth it ( ... )

So it sounded like Jones hadn't been able to get himself out of the cafeteria before the gas came in. Harvey glanced over at him, though the look on his face was neutral; he doubted the other man would want any pity. It was clear that he was annoyed by it, but that was really all that needed to be said at this point.

Especially since Sangamon here was quick to break out a map and show them where the ring would spit them out -- and it was literally right next to the walk-in fridge. How was that for convenience? For once, Harvey was impressed ( ... )

Indy immediately stood up straighter. If it worked, this ring would take them past every problem area they'd encountered so far--if it worked. He'd heard about these "Portal Rings" from Landel's announcements, but he'd never actually seen one and he wasn't confident in their ability to get anyone to his desired destination consistently. On the other hand, getting around the endless succession of brainwashed adversaries with humiliatingly implausible weapons was worth the risk. Especially since his burned left arm didn't leave him in much condition to fight ( ... )

"Least if he's been shanghai'ed, he's getting to kick some ass rather than play research subject." Project 2911 was the first name they'd been given, but it the last of a long line of data points. Even an idiot could make the connection; correlation wasn't fucking causation, but when the people in charge didn't even give lip service to ethics it was damning. Javert hadn't mentioned any long-term effects from brainwashing. It couldn't be all psychological, not that fast. Short-term, narrow physiological changes to effect sweeping sociological developments. Versus the experiments, which had a longer horizon, but didn't set them at each others' throats ( ... )
