The big connecting corridor. He may be in a rush, but this hallway deserved extra caution. What would he do if he tried to get to Stefan and ended up mauled on the way there? The first night when he'd smelled blood here, it was still a bit... haunting. It meant there was a chance of something lurking, dragon or not ( Read more... )

Though he didn't feel he'd reached the main hall any later than usual, Edgar noted a surprising number of people already out and about- perhaps they were also eager to test the waters of the now military-run institution. Bravery, foolhardiness, curiosity, or determination: whatever got the patients out of their rooms and working against Landel couldn't be a bad thing. Not entirely, at least. He could only hope those who couldn't take care of themselves either traveled with someone who could, or kept out of harm's way.

Of the people already in the hallway, it didn't appear that Ryuuzaki was one of them. Edgar found himself an empty spot along the opposite wall, watching the two halls that led to the patient blocks. Though he had his flashlight off, he was certain he'd spot Ryuuzaki easily enough- his unusual posture did make him stand out.

Whatever face he put on for anyone else, L couldn't fool himself into believing that the return of I.R.I.S. didn't make him nervous. As he moved through the corridors, he watched for the kind of phenomena he had seen that first night: the drywall that seemed to flicker in and out of existence, the figures that shouldn't be there. Nothing. Even if every moment of it had been an appalling trick, he would never forget the sensation of choking on his own blood as it ran out of his mouth: he rubbed his tongue against the back of his teeth, recalling the metallic tang.

When he moved into the main corridor, he saw Figaro waiting for him already. Tonight would show him how much they could trust each other. It might also net some useful supplies for each of them.

He nodded once as he approached. "Have you been waiting long?"

He didn't care, but it seemed like the thing to say. He added, "Let's not waste time. This way," and headed down the corridor towards the east.

While he enjoyed small talk, Edgar had to admit that it was nice to see Ryuuzaki had no qualms with their moving as soon as possible. The night was young yet, but each passing moment brought them closer to morning, to a day in an institute under Aguilar's control. The General's guards already shown less restraint and patience than the nurses. The changes he had in mind for the operation of Landel's institute couldn't possibly be in the patients' favor.

But would they change? Edgar couldn't fully accept that Landel was gone for good. If the man was anything like Kefka, he'd be aching for control again. He'd be back, and probably worse than before when it happened.

"Not really," Edgar answered reflexively, following Ryuuzaki down the hallway.
