From here.]
And here, Byrne paused along the left-hand wall, made sure Rei was still beside him, and then took careful note of his surroundings.
The silence was the most painfully obvious detail here. And another obvious detail was that, unlike every other one he had visited, this hallway was practically deserted. Hadn't anyone else come this way? Someone may have passed through here before, but Byrne was sure that no one was here now. Such an eerie silence. He could feel his senses being sharpened by it, and almost half-expected there to be a trap lying up ahead. Just too damn quiet.
Up ahead on the left, there seemed to be another, smaller hallway that branched off from the main one. And once again there was a set of stairs along the far side of the hall. But other than those things, there didn't appear to be anything else he could see in this darkness. Nothing noteworthy, nothing that made this different than the other halls. No reason to linger about.
Byrne glanced over at his traveling companion and nodded in the direction of the branch hallway, choosing to use body language to communicate rather than speaking. In a silence as thick as this, it was risky to make more noise than necessary.
