Day 55: Cafeteria

Mar 17, 2011 02:05

Though five days without bathing was hardly unusual for Rita, she was actually looking forward to showering today. To her, the last shift had been somewhat enjoyable, if only because it allowed her an opportunity to be alone with her thoughts for a bit. Of course, she couldn't be completely alone in the communal showers, but no one was rude enough ( Read more... )

Even though Peter hadn't held anything against Neku from the start, it had been nice to have a chance to talk to the kid and clear some things up. He now knew how Neku had been able to do all of those things, though the kid obviously didn't have access to the skills anymore. Peter decided he would do what he could to keep up with Neku, just to make sure that he handled things okay from here on out, but their conversation had ended before he knew it ( ... )

It was a little eerie, hearing someone else doing the announcing for Landel's. Even if she hadn't ever liked the original staff, after six days of them and the sudden switch, it was a little jarring. What was more jarring was the realization that it meant she'd gotten used to the life style that Landel's had forced her into to a degree. She had to have gotten somewhat used to it in order for it to really weird her out that the intercom announcements were different, right? Or at least she needed to have some kind of complacence ( ... )

It had really only been a matter of time until Claire found him, though the fact that they had been separated by age last shift and would be again next shift meant that Peter was relieved when the girl walked up. He wasn't really in the position to go wandering around the cafeteria in search of her, after all, and even the bulletin board would be a challenge right now ( ... )

The longer he continued his explanation, the more confused her expression grew, and she wound up shaking her head quickly at her inability to reconcile how his story could possibly have transpired in conjunction with her own experience. Her forehead creased as she tried to find some solution, brows knitting together and eyes clenching shut at the sheer lack of understanding.

"Headed to the pharmacy --" she repeated, evidently not following. "Peter, what are you talking about?" It just wasn't possible. That's what it came down to. There was no way, abilities or no abilities, that Peter could be in two places at once. "You couldn't have gone with them, you were with me the whole night. I came and found you." Her eyes opened and she just shook her head again ( ... )

The confusion that was plain on Claire's face was enough to give Peter a bad feeling. He hadn't been talking about anything particularly complicated, after all, so there had to be something else about his story that was baffling her ( ... )

The idea that she could seriously mistake a monster for her uncle had Claire taken aback a little. Okay, granted, from when he was from, they hadn't seen much of each other. And they hadn't seen that much more since then, but it was enough. And she liked to think that if some monster was impersonating her, Peter would know the difference at least. You just knew with things like that, but not in this case. There was nothing. It had seemed exactly like Peter and the fact that he was acting like she'd just mistaken some creepy monster for him kinda hurt.

Not only that, but it didn't add up. If it was a monster of some kind, wouldn't it have hurt her? Or tried to. There were too many questions and none of them synced up with the things she'd seen and what she knew had been real. Or, had known, anyway. So, there was a little bit of a lilt in her voice that gave way to the fact that it bothered her, but aside from that, she kept it level and instead investigative -- suspicious, really. Obviously something wasn't right, but it ( ... )

It was no real surprise that Claire was reacting badly to what he'd just said. Peter also would have felt pretty weird if he'd spent a night with someone only to be told that it wasn't them after all. It was violating in a weird way, because she had probably put trust into this fake him -- and Claire wasn't the sort of person who seemed to trust all that easily ( ... )

Oh, great. He'd stepped up from thinking she'd confused some decaying mirror freak monster for him to thinking she was totally psychotic and seeing things. That was a real improvement. As hard as she was trying to root herself to some kind of rationality and reassure herself that he was just trying to find an answer for what it could have been, she couldn't help the way her blood heated as she unavoidably grew offended at what she perceived as an accusation.

At least she managed to keep the frustration mostly out of her expression. Mostly. Her jaw still clenched and her lower lip still quivered furiously. The wiser part of her told her that she should probably be prying to find out what was so weird that had happened to Peter to get him this injured and put him in a wheelchair, but she was kind of distracted by how deep she was letting his doubt dig.

"I don't know what it was, but I'm not crazy and I wasn't seeing things. I wasn't just walking around talking to thin air, okay. I touched it. It was real." She wasn't going ( ... )

It would have been much easier to talk with Claire about this sort of thing if she didn't take every comment he made personally. When he'd suggested it was a hallucination, he wasn't trying to imply that she was crazy. The two of them had suffered the effects of one together, for goodness sake; he'd thought she'd understand. But she was digging her heels in about it being more than that, even if she didn't quite know what that meant ( ... )

If he thought she missed the grimace, he was sorely mistaken. He was just lucky the last thing she wanted to do right now was worry over him. She was busy being distracted by her own indignation still, even if Peter was passing it off. Him passing it off came off as just dismissing her, with the mood she was in now, and while she let it slide, she wasn't happy about it either.

Luckily, the idea of a code word was distracting her a little. It sounded stupid -- okay, she was probably biased about that for obvious reasons, but she was positive it would sound stupid even if she weren't just being a grouch. They weren't in some ridiculous spy movie, this was real life and they had real issues and the fact that they had spare Peters running around was just the cherry on top of a miserable situation.

But pessimism wasn't going to help anyone. So, she tried to be compliant.

"You seriously want me to quiz you on a code word every time I see you. You don't think that'll get, you know, annoying?" And unnecessary. And humiliating and ( ... )

So much for teenagers thinking that sort of thing would be cool. Then again, Claire was just in a bad mood overall. Peter wondered if it had been triggered by this whole doppelganger situation or if she'd just been having a bad morning; maybe it was a mix of both. Either way, he didn't think that dismissing the idea just because it seemed silly or over-the-top was good enough reason ( ... )

Given that her frustration was more guilt-driven than anything else (seriously, how had she missed that it wasn't Peter?), the honest edge of concern in Peter's voice and the way that he boiled it down to being worried about her made her bluster deflate. Her shoulders sank a little and her stubborn look relaxed into a slight frown, partially because as a genuine emotional response to what he was saying, and partially because she wasn't sure how he could manage to be so well-balanced all the time and not let her moodiness get to him ( ... )

It seemed like the fact that he was acting levelheaded was helping to calm Claire down, which was something Peter was going to keep in mind for any future discussions. The argument they'd gotten into yesterday had been a waste of energy as far as he was concerned, which was why he was making sure to keep his cool now. More than that, he really didn't have it in him to start fighting when he was putting half of his attention into the pain he was in. It was good that he was being distracted, but he couldn't completely put it out of his mind either ( ... )

"It's more like you're healing yourself, anyway." She shrugged it off. Okay, maybe it was a little of her frustration with her own ability not being able to help others that had her compartmentalizing it in her mind that way, but still. It was true. She wasn't healing him, he was doing all the work. Borrowing her ability, healing himself. Her power wasn't cool enough to involve healing other people. Just herself ( ... )

Regardless of what Claire said, Peter didn't see it that way at all. It was true that it was his own ability that allowed him to use Claire's, but he wouldn't even be able to do that if she wasn't around, if she wasn't there at his side. She mattered just as much as he did -- if not more so, considering what her blood could do. Then again, it was pretty common for kids her age to be down on themselves, especially considering how she was already in a bad mood for a number of other reasons ( ... )

She could see the enthusiasm for the dogtag idea whittling out of Peter's expression and she slowly deflated as she processed the issues with it herself. Right. They could fabricate the rest of Peter, apparently, and they'd made the tags. They could probably make an extra set. It left her with a nagging curiosity of what they'd been trying to do by sending something that looked just like him after her without hurting her -- project 2911 maybe? But what kind of experiment was it?

A headache. That was for sure. However, his next suggestion considered her mood to lighten just slightly at a memory. Something she hadn't thought about the whole time she was in the institute since she'd been busy being pissed at her father for partnering up with Sylar of all people. A quiet kind of smile appeared on her face briefly but disappeared as quickly as it had come and she cleared her throat, looking up from the table at Peter's face ( ... )
