Day 56: Callahan's Grocer (late afternoon)

May 16, 2011 01:25

It looked like the day was nearing its end, and Anise still had plenty of money to spend. The way the sky darkened well before the end of the trip was a bit unnerving. Did the monsters come out at sundown, or did they come out at a specific time chosen by the institute staff...? Whatever the case was, she supposed she ought to stay on her guard ( Read more... )

After her time with Guy, Natalia had finally yielded to hunger, and made use of the coupon to the Twin Pines. She'd lunched alone. When she walked from the restaurant, little light remained in the sky. Though Natalia had yet to actually encounter a monster, she had seen the handiwork of the beasts. The entire atmosphere of the Institute changed when the lights went out, unsettled. It had not yet been a week, at least not that she remembered, and Natalia had already developed a visceral reaction to the darkness.

She shivered, and it had little to do with the cold. But it was cold. Still wanting to find Anise, she began to wonder if it was possible in the time they had left in Doyleton. It surely wasn't much. Not enough, either, to explore every store as she also desired. She hugged the baggy given to her in the morning to her chest, that which now had her second headband carefully folded. (Wider, a slightly different style from the one she currently wore). Her attention moved from shop to shop, when her eyes fell on a fruit stand ( ... )

Looking around the aisle, Anise was able to find a rack with several bags of soft candies hanging from it. Was this where the gels - or gummies, the man had called them - were?

She didn't get to check right away, as she was interrupted by the sound of her own name... in the voice of someone she definitely didn't expect to encounter so soon. "Natalia!!" she gasped as she whirled around. Sure enough, the princess was right there with her, even though Anise had confirmed her disappearance last night! Or... was she wrong?

"Where have you been!?" she asked, her tone more bewildered than accusing. "I looked for you last night, but you weren't in your room, and they said it wasn't your room anymore, so I thought..." Anise was practically babbling now, and she stopped herself before she got too unintelligible. Once she caught her breath, she looked up at Natalia, trying to see if she could spot any obvious signs of injury or distress. When she didn't find any, she asked in a quieter voice, "... You're okay?"

Stopping about a foot from the younger girl, Natalia reflected Anise's confusion in the lift in her shoulders, in her expression. Having explained it three times already, Natalia knew how weak her story sounded, yet had nothing else to offer. "I... I'm afraid I don't know. When I woke last night, it was in a different room in the F Block. I last remembered speaking to Guy, right after I'd spoken with you at breakfast ( ... )

As she listened to Natalia speak, Anise's look of surprise and concern gradually shifted into a light smile. In the end, she managed to laugh a little at the anecdote, too. "Whatever they did, they sure messed us up, huh? But we're both okay now, so it's probably okay to leave it at that." Natalia didn't really need to apologize; it wasn't something she could have helped ( ... )
