Day 56: Bus 2

May 20, 2011 12:24

It was hard for Guy to believe that a farfetched idea of his might actually work out in the end, seeing how rare that was in this place. Still, he had found the leather and had been allowed to buy it, which meant that the toughest part at this point would be finding tools to work with and also blocking out enough time to work on making the sheath. Ah...that had been great fun. He hadn't actually spent his five dollars, but it wasn't that much of a lost opportunity because he'd spent someone else's five dollars. Just as well, then! Niikura couldn't help but chuckle a little bit to himself as he got in line to get back on the bus. He wasn't really the type of person to always mess around like that - okay, that was admittedly somewhat of a lie - but it had been kind of fun.

As he kept telling himself, though, one day he had to make it up to Ippo.

The teen barely kept from rolling his eyes as he submitted to the patdown. He ought to have expected this kind of thing, but it was so annoying, especially since all he was carrying was the standard issue paper bag--which was promptly confiscated. Wonder if I'll get it back tonight... Not that it had much in there that he wanted -- other than those five dollars ( ... )

By the time Lana had arrived at the buses, a long line had already formed. Security? Now? It seemed a little late for that, but she dutifully waited in line to hand over her purchases and be patted down. At least one scuffle had broken out, and there were a lot of people clearly unhappy or unfamiliar with the process.

Pity courthouse security wasn't even half this thorough. Though some of the most egregious cases had come in on an evidence docket in the first place ( ... )

"Sorry?" Niikura looked away from the window, blinking. The confusion on his face hardly lasted for long; as soon as he heard Lana give her name, his eyes lit up and his lips curved into a friendly smile. "Oh! Heh, same to you, Chief Prosecutor Skye." He shook her hand firmly. "Can't believe someone like me's actually that well-known in these parts. I'm honored."

His last words were said with just the slightest hint of self-deprecation: he knew very well the sorts of people who would have told Lana Skye about him. It would have been either Gant or Badd; who would have offered the kinder picture - if "kinder" was even applicable - of him? If he had to guess, he would put his money on Gant. His first impression with Badd had been anything but favorable, whereas up until their showdown, Gant had probably seen him as weird, strange, and sketchy at best - but otherwise mostly harmless.

He settled more fully into his seat, lacing his fingers together in front of him. "Anyway, what's the occasion? Or was that the only open seat left?"

He'd gotten her title right -- or wrong, depending on who'd told it to him. Though it might have been herself, on the bulletin; she wasn't the only one with a notebook full of minor details. Punk didn't usually imply studiousness, but perhaps Badd hadn't had time for more than a cursory first impression.

He wasn't stupid, nor violent. Quite the contrary. What a puzzling young man.

"Not the only one, but I admit I wasn't looking for you when I boarded. I'm sorry." Her expression didn't flicker. "That was a terrible way to start a conversation. As it happens, I think I've had quite enough surprise encounters with people I do know, and was looking for an unfamiliar face. Perhaps another riveting conversation about the weather. Funny how things work out, isn't it."

It had indeed been Lana on the bulletin: Niikura had not failed to take advantage of all of those lovely law enforcement personnel drawing attention to themselves in that one very convenient post. Let it never be said that Akumetsu didn't do its research.

"Ah, got-cha. Well! Can't say I'm too familiar, can ya? Second-hand info's not always the most reliable, although I gotta admit I'm guilty of usin' it myself." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "And we can just talk about the weather if ya like" - Actually, he would rather prefer to talk about something mundane; he'd had enough of defending himself and his ways against all these Los Angeles cops and lawyers. - "since I don't imagine it gets like this often where you're from."

He paused as the bus engines rumbled to life and they began pulling out of the town, waiting for a few seconds or so before adding off-handedly, "Kinda sucks if you're hopin' to poke around outdoors at night."

"No, it doesn't." Snow like this only showed up Hollywood, or way up in the mountains. Not places Lana had spent much time in, though studio crime scenes weren't precisely unheard of. He knew she was from Los Angeles -- that wasn't a surprise, but it was nice to see someone could put together a logical progression of details.

"Is there much to be found outside? Aside from these little trips, I'm afraid I haven't made that a priority." Not only because of the weather. Though Ema might be better off, if anything, out in the quiet, at least when it wasn't the middle of a blizzard.

"Aye, I figured, it bein' Los Angeles and all. What, I'm guessin' it would still be sunny this time of year?" Imagine that, summer and spring all year round. Smelled like boring to him, but some people had to have their nice, temperate temperature ranges or else.

"And I haven't really made the great outdoors much of a priority either, to be honest," Niikura replied, shaking his head. "All sorts of fun to be found if ya go, though...tried gettin' out the back way twice, got caught up with all kinds of nasties almost the instant I stuck my foot out the rec field door." First it had been that stupid nose-pirate, Usopp, and then it had been Ju-On. Frankly, he was still surprised that he wasn't cursed or something. "Went out the front way once with this guy - 'Recluse' or somethin' like that - and hah! Your man, Damon Gant." He chuckled briefly, recalling their excellent conversation (It had truly been the start of something beautiful.) before continuing: "All we found was this creepy altar that ya could lie on, but I think ya would have ( ... )

"And yet you keep trying." The corner of her mouth quirked. "I'm not sure if that makes you admirable...or merely creative in your cures for boredom."

Not that she'd done much different; she'd stayed indoors, but she was slowly amassing a stack of evidence that appeared to be perfectly useless. It had begun with the minor -- what use did a small psychiatric institution have with an autopsy room? -- and progressed accordingly. She had had quite enough of being a cog in someone else's grand plan, thank you.

"Do you happen to know what the furthest point anyone has reached?" There had to be other people out there somewhere. Didn't there?

"How about ya call me both?" Niikura quipped with a wink and a sly smile. The latter one was probably the truer one, although perhaps his ability to recover so swiftly from so many traumatizing experiences was admirable in its own way...

He frowned at Lana's question. "'M not sure about that one. It's hard to gauge since there doesn't seem to be an organized map of the surroundin' area, ya know? So it'd be difficult to gauge distances and stuff. Know there're a few points of interest, though." So far, he'd caught wind - mostly through careful watching of the board - of a mine, some ruins, and a lake. Absolutely fascinating.

Good answer. Lana relaxed a little. He wasn't giving her explanations, but leads -- two could play at that game.

"The average person walks three miles per hour...but you're right, that doesn't do us much good without a watch." First, acknowledge the point. She missed this sort of conversation -- she hadn't gone this long without a trial to run in two years, and it was exhilarating. And didn't require dealing with Damon; conversations with him were just as intellectual, but much more loaded.

"I've heard about quite a few places that might be worth seeing, but it's been a few years since I had to do my own legwork. I don't suppose you've seen anything you'd recommend I check out personally?"

Man, she was good. Granted, Skye was a lawyer, so it wasn't like she lacked for brains, but Niikura did like it when someone could match him pretty much pound for pound. It meant he didn't have to spell out as much and be so deliberately obvious.

...Did make things a bit harder for him, though.

"Really, huh? I wonder if we've got the same info. As for personal recommendations, sorry, can't say much more than that altar I mentioned already." One day, he would get someone to do the dirty work for him and give it a go as a bed. His morbid curiosity demanded it.

"There is only one bulletin board." She raised both eyebrows at him. One board, and all of it public, even the notes people tried to conceal. She tended not to go poking through everyone's correspondence, but the fact that communication was happening wasn't possible to hide.

"So that was south? Down the road to town?" Not a destination she planned on trying for herself, at least not with Ema in tow; scientific experimentation would end up with one of them on the slab, and the mental image had far too much in common with the morgue for comfort.

Information for information; that was something she could do. Even if she'd misjudged Niikura, he had no reason to hold a grudge against her. Gant hadn't impressed him; he wouldn't be playing flunky even if he did move against her. "The most interesting thing I've found indoors was a morgue. No bodies, but there were some decent knives."

He chuckled. "I meant from the same posts, Skye-san, since there's been a ton of discussion - easy to lose things when you're not always checkin' - but ya are right." Yes, contrary to popular imagination, Niikura could be gracious enough to admit when he'd misspoken.

"Aye, and then ya head east. There's a river that runs through the forest, but when we went through we didn't follow it or anythin'." If it sounded easy, that was because it had been, aside from the sudden communication breakdown they'd experienced. Probably a lucky break on their part.

And ah, how nice, a little tidbit for himself. He'd already signed himself up for another run to that damn shed again, though, but if that didn't work out, maybe he could convince Mike and Phoenix to take a look at this morgue...not that it sounded like a pleasant place to go. "Hm! Kinda sad that that's the best place around, but oh well, knives are always useful. Glad ya didn't happen across any bodies."

Gracious, indeed. She didn't doubt that Niikura could be dangerous; that wasn't a mistake anyone in law enforcement would make, but he was someone she could work with. With a common cause, they needed all the allies they could get. Even Damon had admitted that.

"In retrospect, it's surprising. This place has quite the supply of dangers." Overkill, in deeply literal fashion. She didn't need more makeshift weaponry; a gun would be useful, since she did know how to handle one, but those were a little rarer than baseball bats and candlesticks.

"If you run into Mr. Wright again, please, don't be too hard on him. I owe him a great deal." She preferred not to explain why; implying that she knew him should be enough to make sure he knew they came from the same place, and that would stand as explanation enough. "He's not quite as helpless as he might seem, though I'm not sure he's any good when it comes to a physical confrontation."

It was a little too easy to think of the possibilities had Lana actually found bodies; the most obvious one involved flesh-eating zombies lunging off the tables for his throat - actually, it'd be his brain, right? So his head - at point-blank range. And he'd never died by zombie before. And I don't want to, thanks."I'll take those small concessions when they come, I think," Niikura said, rubbing the back of his neck again. "If that's even a concession ( ... )
