Day 56: Bus 3

May 21, 2011 05:15

As the day came to a close, Claude's conversation with Tear weighed heavily on his mind. All the implications hadn't quite sunk in yet, but it unsettled him that she'd been able to feel and experience his time in the basement in such a strong way. Was there some kind of significance behind the fact she'd lived the moment he ran toward Guy in a ( Read more... )

After buying his duffel bag, Peter hadn't really known what to do with the rest of his day. He'd tried to track down Claire and see if she had found anything to buy (or to offer her the rest of the money on his card), but that had failed and eventually it had become clear that there wasn't much time left in the day. Seeing how he'd accomplished the one thing that he'd hoped to, he didn't mind that they were now heading back. While returning to the institute was by no means a good thing, it was where he could really get things done and it wasn't as if the town was really any closer to freedom in the first place.

Besides, going back meant that they weren't going to be attacked by zombies, which was always a good thing ( ... )

Instead of buying something useful, like a duffel bag, Wichita spent her five dollars on another cheese burger meal. Yes, another. As soon as she and Scott finished their lunch meet-up date thing, she went right back to the counter to order another. And it wasn't that the first one wasn't filling, it really was. But there was just something about being able to eat a medium-well burger with all the fixings without having to worry about whether or not she would be craving human flesh after that made the temptation impossible to resist. And the fact that she had enough cash to get a milk shake to accompany it made the deal just that much sweeter ( ... )

It wasn't long before Peter was approached by someone who wanted to share his seat with him, which was no surprise considering how many patients there were in comparison to seats. Anyone who got a seat to themselves could consider themselves lucky.

Or maybe not, seeing how in general Peter preferred to have someone to talk to. Not everyone was like that, of course, but he didn't mind at all when a teenage girl approached him. She looked about Claire's age, maybe a bit older, which at least meant he now had some experience with talking to her age group.

"It isn't," he said with a shake of his head, gesturing that she could go ahead and sit down. She looked mildly uncomfortable; maybe she wasn't a fan of buses. A lot of people got carsick in them, after all, and the road from the town to the institute had a lot of twists and turns. "I'm Peter," he greeted her. "You all right?"

Wichita grins once he gives her the 'okay', sliding into the seat and slouching down to get comfy right away. Man, this was unreal. She felt Thanksgiving-Stuffed after just a couple burgers and some fries. She was trying not to think about it, maybe if she just focused on something else the stuffedness would take a back-burner, but that wasn't working ( ... )

Of all the reasons that she could have not been feeling well, over-eating was not what Peter would have expected. It just seemed like such a normal problem when usually what they were worrying about here were monster attacks and the threat of zombie infection. That it was something so ordinary was enough to make him smile back at her and nod. Well, he didn't exactly get what she meant, but he had gone overboard at meals enough times in his life to understand the sentiment ( ... )

The movement of the bus didn't seem to bother her, if anything she was just glad to be headed somewhere with a bed she could lounge out on. Even if that meant they were going back to the hospital or whatever the hell that place was. Loony bin? Wow, that was really PC of her. She looked past Peter for a second, out the window, and considering she had roadtripped all over the country over the past few years, it was just weird that she couldn't recognize where they were at all. She couldn't even guess. It made her nervous, despite the fact that everybody else seemed fine with it. Or maybe they were just jaded at this point. She understood that all too well.

She took his hand to shake, and that was what made her realize how long it had been since she actually exchanged pleasantries with someone. Which was probably a random thing to take note of, but really. Before Columbus and Tal, she and her sister hadn't exactly gotten to know the few people they ran into along their trip to California. Mostly because it would have been just plain ( ... )

It was pretty strange, hearing a tourist talk about New York City when he had lived there his entire life. Still, it was interesting to know what she thought of it, and "insane" was a good word to describe it. Peter was used to it, but he realized that the sheer energy that that city produced was pretty nuts. Wichita didn't seem to be a big fan, but a lot of people who weren't used to the Big Apple didn't really like it at first. He was pretty sure it was the sort of thing that grew on you. Still, thinking back on it like this just added to his homesickness, not that that was Wichita's fault.

The moment that she said "Brooklyn," Peter paused for a moment, remembering the friend he'd made here who went by that name. Another New Yorker, but Brooklyn had disappeared a while back. At least he hadn't gone out like Roland, although maybe he had and Peter just hadn't known. That was an upsetting thought ( ... )

"Alright, Manhattan then." Her expression softened a little, because yeah, she absolutely could tell the name struck a chord with him. And of course she didn't mean to bring it up, which is why she felt bad. Wichita could be a sarcastic ass sometimes, but it always took her off guard when she managed to unintentionally hit a soft spot.

"So." Yes, she was changing the subject. She wasn't going to dwell, nor let him dwell either. "What's your take on this place? So far I've just learned that I can't go around making jokes about other people's choices in code names because they're... not always code names, and that the hospital is filled with things that go bump in the night, but only at night. And the uniforms kinda suck." She paused to make sure her recap was accurate. "Yeah, that's all I got. But I haven't been here for very long, so. I guess that makes sense."

Peter was relieved that she had accepted the other suggestion for a name without a fight, though there was a chance she'd picked up on the fact that his memories of Brooklyn weren't good ones. Well, they were, but the kid had disappeared without a trace and that was enough to make any thought of him turn into a downer. He hardly meant to bring the mood so low when this girl was being friendly, though, and so he quickly moved to a new subject along with her ( ... )
