[ from here]Tolten tried to seem confident as he took the lead, proceeding further into the dark corridors. There had been nothing overtly threatening so far, but his heart was racing in his chest even so. He couldn't shake a sense of lurking danger, of shadowing hidden fear. He tried to tell himself he was being foolish, but experience told him ( Read more... )

"We're going in search for something vital to survival in any environment, Mike." Gant locked his stern gaze on the young officer and hoped it would add more impact to the next statement. "We... are going to find some real food."

He paused, then clarified. "I would rather starve than eat that bile, but I'd rather not starve all the same. So, we're going to sneak into the kitchen and grab something meant for real human consumption." He smiled widely. "Got any problems with that?"

They paused just outside the door to the Sun Room. From outside, it already sounded like a war zone in there. They were going to have to tread lightly. "I hope you don't have any hang-ups about facing danger. You're one of Los Angeles' best--" God, that was stretching it, "--so buck up and be ready for anything." He knew better than to try to be the man's counselor or whatever when it came to his unending idiocy.

At least he was enthusiastic enough.

He managed a smile and put his hand on the doorknob. "That's the spirit, Mike! But when we go in here, you need to keep your lips zipped and move as fast as you can. We're aiming for the kitchen. Just stick next to me and we'll make our way through at a run."

Gant waited only a bit longer to get Meekins' response. Turning off his flashlight, he then threw the door open and headed through at a dead run.
