[From
here.]The room was mainly empty when Michael reached it, which was fine by him. It wasn't that he didn't feel sympathy for the other patients, but he also didn't know if it would be helpful for him to talk to them. The staff seemed to think that forming bonds amongst themselves would lead to recovery, but to him it felt more like they would

The bulletin board, at least, had proven that he'd been right: it was more interesting out here. Mikado (or so he assumed) was asking about fellow people from Ikebukuro there-he left a reply to that one, changing the slant and style of his words enough so that someone (Mikado) wouldn't be able to match it with his writing elsewhere-and there were other notes of interest, too: about the drugs from last night, about 'nightmares', even one about Castiel...
But even though the board was full of interesting topics, his purpose in leaving the showers early hadn't been to stay glued to it-not when there was a room full of people just waiting. He turned from the board, walking along the side of the room and deciding whether he should approach someone, or just find a place to watch from. He noticed Mikado was in here-with Snow Villiers of all people, and that made him curious. Should he approach them? Ah, but Mikado didn't necessarily know that he and Snow were acquainted, and if he went over to them, the boy would find out ( ... )

Without any memories of her own, could she really trust a complete stranger? Trust that he was telling the truth about her? How was she supposed to know what to do without a past to guide her?
She shook her head. Blonde bangs fell into her eyes, but she made no move to brush them back; her hands were distracted, idly pulling at her fingers without reason. "Whenever I try to think, it just makes my head hurt."

...Well, there could have been more to it than that, too, and in any case, he'd already come over. He glanced at Mikado and Villiers again (the sound of Snow's voice carried across the room and Izaya could make out bits and pieces-it sounded like he was introducing himself, but had he just called Mikado 'Ryuu'?), but then returned his attention to the girl. He smiled at her.
"In that case, maybe a distraction is in order," he said. Whatever it was she was trying to think about may have been important or it may not have been-but he couldn't learn anything at all if he left her alone now. "I'm Orihara Izaya, and you are...?"

"I don't... have any memories before last night." There was no point to hiding such a thing, she thought; a person could hide something that existed, but what point was there to disguising an absence? "If that was last night. I can't even remember my name."
She leaned her chin against her knee, her eyes fixed on Izaya's face. Looking for some cue in his expression, though for what she didn't know.

And then his day took a turn for the better.
She didn't remember anything before last night. It was simply amnesia, but that was wonderful. Izaya's expression didn't change, but there was a glimmer of new interest in his eyes.
She didn't even know her own name! She had clearly retained a grasp on language (though what language it might be he couldn't say), but beyond that... How much did she know about the world, and how much knowledge might she have retained about herself that she may not have even realized she actually knew? Or was she a blank slate now?-a human being with infinite possibilities; someone who could become anyone, completely free of any previous beliefs and ideals and goals and history! Even if there was a sense of it remaining, for the girl to forget everything that made her an ( ... )

Unless everyone already knew of her condition, and had worked together to tell the same lines. It was hard to judge, and even more so to know how. The chain ran through the loop with a quiet clinking, and the girl peered at the words and numbers etched there. At least it answered where her escort had gotten 'Turner.' But this, too, did not feel right. Wouldn't truth resonate more firmly than this ( ... )

He watched her coolly as she lifted the tags to look at the name upon it, running her thumb across it. A smile reappeared on his face once she looked back at him-her uncertainty was written so plainly on her face-and relayed the name on the tags ( ... )

Interest was a spark in her eyes, and thought was a crease in her brow. If there was anything about her in files, it might be enough to say whether or not Locke was telling the truth about her. Tina and Terra weren't that far off one another, as far as names went; confusing one for the other, could that have been a simple, harmless mistake?
When her gaze refocused on Izaya, her question -- her decision -- was painted across her face. She may not have known what else to do, with herself or with her time, but there was no denying the need to understand who she was ( ... )

"I don't, I'm afraid," he answered. If he had, he would have gone to look at his own file long ago. "The next time the nurses are here, you might be able to ask them about it... Or, maybe someone will know if you ask around."
Now that was an idea; maybe he should ask on the bulletin. He would be discrete about his identity when asking, of course, but as long as he would be able to peek in his file... Maybe it held an answer or two about that nauseating letter, and about who Joshua Takahashi was supposed to be... Ah, and if it did, then the next time he saw Venkman, he wouldn't be at such a loss. He could play his assigned part instead of trying to figure out what that part was supposed to be.
"If I find out before you do, I'll be sure to let you know," he volunteered. Free information, but the outcome from it could be interesting to watch...

The way it played on her face, it looked like she hadn't smiled in years. Her "thank you" was as soft as the rest her, and just as new.
It didn't hold together long, for already she was considering how to follow this lead, her focus withdrawing back into herself. There were only a few people she'd talked to since waking that night, but it was possible one of them would know. If not, there was the medical wing they'd visited; she had amnesia, and this was a hospital. Would they keep files near to where they kept medications? Bella had said that that place might have something for her. Then again, she couldn't remember much of what happened once they'd entered that area, so maybe...
If nothing else, it was a place to start.
