Day 58: Lunch

Aug 25, 2011 11:03

Although it had been good to see his mom again, Claude entered the cafeteria with a dark expression on his face. He was glad she felt comfortable enough with him to share her experiences from last night, but that didn't make him any less angry at the military for using her to do their dirty work. Why couldn't those bastards clean up their own ( Read more... )

Usually, Rapunzel wasn't one to sleep in. She tended to be awake and busying herself before 7 on any normal day. The previous night, however, had definitely not been normal, and no amount of fake Institute sleep was going to fix that for her. After briefly waking with Tsubaki, she had found herself too overwhelmed and exhausted to get out of bed, and stayed there for hours before the rumbling in her stomach finaly roused her. She made a note to herself as she got out of bed and let her soldier escort her to the cafeteria: never get nearly blown up and have to walk across a desert at night ever again, if at all possible.

After making sure other people in the Institute had that same helpful information available to them, Rapunzel made for the food line. Disgustingly bland though the gruel was, she was getting better at swallowing and stomaching it, at least. It was better than nothing, especially on an empty stomach ( ... )

The chance to meet a member of the military staff? That was an opportunity Soma would welcome as well as anyone--though how much they would actually have to share was of course up for debate. If Landel had censored his employees' knowledge before, it stood to reason that Aguilar might try the same tactics as well.

Besides, Soma had other things to worry about. Rapunzel and Tsubaki had both responded to her note, but that had done little to alleviate Soma's fears. It was easy enough to say you were uninjured physically, but Soma knew as well as anyone what even a small military mission might have done to upset already frayed nerves. She wanted to see her friend, and see her as soon as possible.

Thankfully, even from this distance, that telltale hair was unmistakable. Soma closed the distance between her and the other girl as quickly as she could, ignoring the fact that she'd almost spilled her pink slop. She didn't look injured, but ( ... )

Rapunzel had spotted the other girl approaching and let out a sigh of relief. She waved Soma over, slid into a seat, and just about jumped right back out of it when the girl slammed her tray down on the table. To be fair, Rapunzel was almost as relieved to see Soma all right, but wow, she still hadn't been expecting this big a reaction.

"Yes! Yes, I'm fine. Don't worry," said Rapunzel, holding up her hands in front of her reassuringly. "We did get hurt out there, but they let me have back all of my hair's magic for the night."

She tapped her forehead. "See right here? Little glass shards and cuts all in there. Ugh." She shuddered. "But I was able to get rid of all our injuries after we got away from the exploded hummer. And then Tsubaki was able to get us through the rest of the desert, no problem."

She let out a sigh, feeling a little overwhelmed that she could sum up the experience so quickly when it had felt like forever actually being there. Maybe they could move on to something else instead, she thought. "What about you? What ( ... )
