Day 58: Arts & Crafts (Fourth shift)

Aug 30, 2011 12:49

Firo was glad to see the end of lunch, if only for the fact that in a few more hours, the day would be over. Night was the only time he had any real freedom of movement, and it was the only time he could do something worth doing, instead of just sitting around ( Read more... )

Compared to the rest of the day, lunch had been an improvement. Al had, weather he meant to or not, lifted his mood just by saying 'hi'. Though, he now had plenty more to think about, it was better than he'd expected it to be, pink slop or not.

However, being led to a room full of craft things. A very small part of him was intrigued, and, if the situation hadn't been what it was, Locke might even find he enjoyed messing with the materials there. Unfortunately, this was neither the time nor the place, he had far too much weighing on his mind, even with his mood improved. Instead of actively doing anything with the supplies he found, he picked up a few random things and pretended to be busy doing something until the time he was supposed to spend here was over.

At least it would give him time to consider everything.

Fortunately, Byrne had been granted his wish for having a quiet lunch. No one came to bother him, and that gave him ample time to cool off and think straight about his situation. He entered the next shift of the day with a much calmer attitude than he'd had in earlier hours - almost a miracle, considering the state he'd been in this morning ( ... )

Locke glanced up to the older man who approached him and nodded, flashing a quick and easy smile. Even if he was only going to pretend to be following along with the silly activities this place was forcing him into, he could at least have company while doing it.

"Go ahead, the more the merrier, right? Though, maybe not in this place."

It was a weak attempt at humor, but, it would have to do considering everything he was still caught up in thinking about.

Byrne nodded his head in thanks and then took his seat, chuckling a little at the other man's joke as he did so. The question still remained, however: why the hell were they making them do arts and crafts?

The prosecutor was at the point of not caring. Though he'd calmed significantly since the morning hours, there were still so many things bothering him. Rei was gone before he'd even had the chance to apologize to her or figure things out from that night with the scorpion. Someone on the board reported that the military were conducting missions of some kind, and dangerous ones at that. There were drug trials of some kind the night before...and speaking of the night before...

He heaved a sigh, leaning upon the table to rest his face in his hands. "I just can't make heads or tails of this place anymore," he muttered, half to himself and half to the man sitting next to him.

Locke gave the man a look of sympathy at his sigh. He'd heard that kind of sigh before, it was the sigh of a man at the end of his rope. Maybe he'd gone through something as well, knowing this place, it was more than likely, and, if not him, than maybe someone he knew.

"Sounds like you've been here a while." Longer than he had, anyway. "From what I can tell, there's not much that makes sense here, don't know if there's much point in trying to rationalize any of it, you know?"

Not that he didn't want to know why or know the reason to everything that went on here, but, he also didn't see the point in driving yourself crazy trying to connect things that wouldn't normally connect but do and rationalizing them. Just led to more questions and more loose threads.

"And, not to offend you are anything, but, it also sounds like you've been through something. Want to talk about it? Sometimes it helps to have someone willing to listen, even a completely unrelated person like me."

WOW I almost forgot about this. ^^;; Whoops! corvus_veritas September 19 2011, 01:19:06 UTC
Byrne glanced up at the other man with an exhausted look on his face. The guy was right, as Badd had been right this morning. Trying to make too much sense of a puzzle that didn't make any sense was only going to give him migraines and more loose ends. But it was his job to catch criminals, solve mysteries, and figure out motives; it was a hard habit to break.

"I haven't been here as long as some others," Byrne replied, looking back down at the table. "Only about five days. Just feels like forever. Too many things happening all at once." It was getting a little difficult to take, honestly. Maybe it was just better to become numb to all of this if he hoped to make it out of here in one piece.

Locke felt sympathy for the guy. He might not know what this man had been through, but it clearly was just as pleasant as what Edgar had been through. He couldn't help but feel he'd caught this guy on an off day and that he wasn't normally like this.

He figured anyone who was here for any amount of time might begin to lose hope. It was just that sort of place.

"Longer than me. Still, I know it might not mean much from someone you just met, but you gotta hold out. As difficult as this place seems to be, I figure hope's just about all we've got that they can't take away, yeah? So, whatever happens, don't lose it, otherwise there's really no point in trying to escape, is there?"

Even if he didn't know them all, Locke figured everyone trapped in this place against their will deserved to escape and as intact as possible too. After hearing the way Edgar had spoken last night, he didn't want to hear anyone else have that sort of loss of hope in their voice again.

"Oh, um, I'm Locke, by the way. Locke Cole."

The prosecutor stared quietly at the younger man for a few moments, thinking at first that he was probably too new here to understand everything this place was capable of. On second thought, it wasn't very fair to judge another like that. The man - Locke - was trying his best to be reassuring, something any decent person would do. Any optimistic person would do. Byrne privately wished he had more of that than he did right now.

And hope... How ironic and cliche it was to fight such incredible tyranny with something like hope. And yet that one word was why Byrne had been so eager to start the Yatagarasu to begin with. He'd refused to give in when hope had seemed pointless. If anything, Badd's speech earlier in the morning was proof that not all was lost, wasn't it?

Somehow, Byrne managed a smile at the fellow man. "Byrne Faraday," he responded, then added a moment later, "Keep up that optimism, Locke. You'll need it."
