Day 58: Intercom, Evening

Sep 03, 2011 10:14

The dinner announcement came as something utterly unexpected. Rather than Harrington's excited tones, the calm accented voice of the General drifted through the intercom speakers ( Read more... )

Rose had actually spent most of the afternoon relaxing. The Sunroom had proven wonderful for that, and considering they'd allowed her a shower, her day had gone fairly well, with the exception of the Incident at breakfast. Which she wasn't thinking about or else she'd start fuming again.

Still, as the day progressed she started recognizing signs of her increasing hunger. It wasn't dangerous yet, but she was going to have to feed soon or it would be. Damn, she'd meant to ask Damon about that before he'd pissed her off. What were he and Stefan doing about it? Well, what Damon was doing was obvious, considering Alaric's mortification this morning, but Stefan... was he using Elena or had he made other arrangements?

Arriving first in her room, she sighed and flopped down on the bed, eying the Institute's attempt at dinner with a skeptical look. For once, she wished feeding was that easy, even if that didn't look at all palatable. Neither had someone's jugular the first time she'd had to feed, before instinct and hunger kicked in. Maya disliked those days where, at the end of the day, she was left trying to make sense of the various brain-stimulating things she'd collected, as well as make a few decisions in which she was not aware of the full score.

And she hadn't even managed to finish her paper rose, she thought morosely as she followed her escort-the soldier did insist on walking ahead as if Maya couldn't remember her room after the length of time she'd been here. It would be quite irritating if Maya paid it any mind, but in this case, there seemed to be a reason for the rush, yes? More military nonsense, as if the general deliberately sought to undermine his passionate speech about cooperation by demonstrating his power. If he wanted to communicate with his soldiers, there were confounded portable radio devices for such a purpose.

Speaking of roses.... All thoughts of paper craft and the distasteful military regime flew out of Maya's head as she caught sight of the Rose she should have thought of this morning. "Rose. Did you fare well last night ( ... )

Rose sat up once more when her roommate came in, looking sheepish at the greeting. "Well enough," she hedged, her expression giving away that that wasn't entirely true. "And I wouldn't say I took him at face value, merely that I... Oh, hell. Well, I underestimated how much they knew about us here and where we come from and didn't think they'd have too much affect on me. Which... wasn't entirely incorrect. I just suffered a little fear of the dark and kept seeing things out of the corner of my eye. It could have been worse. The guy I was with turned into a giant monster dog. I'd say I got off easy."

Realizing she was babbling, she rubbed her temples as she offered Maya an apologetic smile. "Sorry. I'm rambling. How was your night and day? I take it you maintained more intelligence than I did last night?"

-Ah. Fear of the dark and turning into a dog? One colluded with what she knew, the other did not. Maya went over Rose' words carefully as she took a seat at her desk, and the bed caught her eye. Too much information to sift through again; shall she sleep through her frustration tonight? But if she slept, she couldn't discover how far the general planned on blocking her path, could she? What a dilemma.

"I am fine." Not quite a truth (she was quite annoyed), but as she was not harmed, not a lie, either. "Perhaps I was simply too cautious. All of you seem not to have suffered extensively."

'All of you' was only three people, and that was only counting whether Rose had checked up on the welfare of her companion this morning, but there was no reason to clarify. Not when there was something more interesting to hold her attention. "'How much they know about you,' did you say? What is your situation that they wouldn't have affected you, if I may ask?"
