Billy surfaced into wakefulness. Sleep receded like an inky tide, and it didn't say anything to him before it was gone. His dreams had been nothing but the sensation of water, rocking him restlessly in his bottle. There seemed to be an ocean beyond his confines, but he couldn't see it and couldn't reach it. He pawed at the glass, but any progress

Aigis was also noting the peculiar sight of many of the other patients rejecting their breakfasts that day. Personally, she found the gruel to be tasteless and unappetizing, but not so disgusting that she wouldn't eat what little she could in order to keep from starving. It had been several days, however. Perhaps tempers were merely running thin concerning the slop.
Bowl of gruel in hand, Aigis located a table that had a familiar face. A smile grew on her lips as she took a seat, feeling comfortable enough in Carter's presence to not have to ask if it was permissible to sit with him.
"Good morning," was her greeting, along with a small nod. "How was your night, Carter-san?"

He stopped midsentence and looked over his shoulder. The guards might be listening and he didn't want Claire to have gone to all that trouble of dying just for him to go and let the secret out. Carter leaned closer to Aigis and lowered his voice, though he couldn't get rid of the giddy excitement in his tone.
"I saw a friend of mine last night. She escaped but she's still hiding near the institute. I left her some notes and I'm gonna go out tonight to see if I can meet up with her in person."

"That is wonderful, Carter-san!" To think, one of the other patients had escaped. Not been brainwashed and sent to act like a drone in this world's bizarre society. Not back home, which was the real goal in escape for most. But it was progress, and it was definitely a strong blow to the institute's overseers itself.
"How have you left her notes? Did you manage to figure out how she escaped?" Aigis' mind was a hive of curiosity just buzzing with questions.

Of course she would leave him more notes. That was what you did between prisoner and escapee, you traded messages and arranged a meetup. Once they got to talking maybe he'd figure out how to escape too, and then they'd escape together and go off to the city and everything would be really great.
He couldn't escape alone, though. That wouldn't be fair. "And I'll make sure you get out too," he promised. "And everyone, too."
