Day 59: Library

Oct 04, 2011 21:16

Anise couldn't get out of the Cafeteria fast enough. The stench of rotted food was overwhelming, and she was starting to feel sick. Most of her nausea came from seeing the people around her eating it, though. Even her friends! Anise didn't know what to do... What if lunch ended up being the same ( Read more... )

When Peter woke up feeling slightly groggy, he knew almost immediately that he must have slept in. As the announcement started talking about therapy sessions and the library, that became even more set in stone. He'd missed breakfast, which wasn't a huge deal, but he still felt a little annoyed with himself for letting it happen. Then again, who was to say that they had any sort of control over that here? It was kind of creepy, actually ( ... )

'Mood 180' wasn't exactly the way Depth Charge would have described the change that breakfast had brought about, but... well. It was pretty close ( ... )

In the end, someone else found him instead of the other way around. Peter glanced over at the tapping sound, taking in Depth Charge's oddly colored hair with a smile on his face. The two of them had forged a strange sort of bond during their time here. Their first conversation had been all about death and more than that, about murder and obligation, but since then it had turned into something Peter was pretty sure counted as a friendship ( ... )

Peter certainly hadn't wasted any time with that; he'd have been relieved to be able to get straight to the point if the subject of his question hadn't been the basement. Even so it wasn't as though Depth Charge begrudged Peter for asking, of course, how could he? He'd told him he was planning on heading down into a death trap. That at least warranted some curiosity ( ... )

Well, that was vague ( ... )

Part of him could understand Peter's frustration (now there was something he hadn't seen in a while, Peter actually frustrated when he normally seemed so relaxed)- hey, if someone had given him some vague warning about what he could and couldn't do around here he'd have laughed in their face and done the opposite just to be contrary. On top of that, these days it seemed like the basement was the only option once you'd gotten sick of blundering aimlessly through hallways. But open mind or not, Depth Charge still couldn't get behind anything but warding the guy off of trying it for himself after what he'd seen and keep a clear conscience for it. They'd had slagging cyber raptors down there, and that had only been the warm up ( ... )

It seemed that his frustration or at least his eagerness to know something about what went on down there had come through, since Depth Charge ended up turning around and offering some information. Or that was what was supposed to have happened, anyway. Instead the guy kept cutting off, like he was struggling to figure out how to phrase it ( ... )

Depth Charge breathed out slowly, pinching the bridge of his nose. Peter had said it for him, and a good thing, too; the idea of having to admit out loud that someone, somewhere had managed to reign in his vocal unit was too much even for him to handle. Hey, it was one thing to teleport him around and take away his options, but to physically silence him? Primus, just about the only thing he had left around here was the ability to get angry about what they were doing.

So much for a marginally improved mood.

"Yeah. Exactly that," he admitted finally, the breathing turning to a far harsher sigh. "Guess they don't want to spoil the surprise for people." And wouldn't that just be the kicker? People waltzing back up and letting people know that the basement didn't just seem like a death trap, it actually was one, and there wasn't even a consolation prize for the lucky winners. ' course, it wouldn't be enough to stop some of the idiots in this place from trying anyway - he had to credit Peter with actually asking questions before ( ... )

It turned out that Peter had read the other man's tone right after all. He frowned, wondering how they managed to prevent them from saying only certain things. But when convincing them to fight their own was a nightly occurrence, it wasn't that much of a stretch to imagine that they could put in mental blocks like that. Still, it was... well, aggravating ( ... )

Depth Charge quietly let out the breath he hadn't even realised he'd been holding. Strange how human bodies worked like that, reacting in ways you barely even registered: a prickle of goosebumps in the cold, your stomach kicking back with horror, the way your breath snagged on a hanging moment. He hadn't even realised that he was waiting for Peter to say that he'd put off exploring the basement until after the guy had said it ( ... )

Gear? Peter didn't know what that was about, but it was probably better not to ask when the guy was called Depth Charge. He had never pried into that all that much, but it was something he should probably discuss with the guy at some point. Peter realized that beyond their talks here, they barely knew all that much about each other ( ... )
