Day 60: Cafeteria

Nov 29, 2011 07:15

Anise had been lying snug in bed, only vaguely aware that she was awake, when her rest was disturbed by the one sound in the world she'd never wanted to hear again.

"Good morning, everyone!"

The girl's eyes shot open and she immediately sat up straight. There was no doubt about it. That was the Head Doctor, that bastard, and he was back! Now that ( Read more... )

Rita was awakened by a gratingly familiar voice on the intercom. Slowly, she untangled herself from her bedsheets, a glare affixed to her face. She could vaguely recall hearing an announcement near the end of the night in which the military spoke of withdrawing ( ... )

[Hope this is okay! ^^ Sorry about the wall of text. XD]Mokona blinked awake and yawned powerfully, peering up at the intercom and towards the unfamiliar voice echoing from it. It took a moment for the unexpected cheerfulness in the man's tone to register, and when it did, the little girl sat up enthusiastically and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. Whoever this was, he sounded much nicer than the announcer she was used to ( ... )

[Of course it's okay!]

Rita paid little attention to the girl who joined her at the table, only registering her presence through her peripherals. She continued to ignore the stranger, focusing only on her food, for several minutes... until the girl began to speak to her, pointing at her face. They 'matched'?

At first, Rita could only stare, scrunching up her face in confusion and disgust at the nonsensical gesture. "What are you...?"

Then it hit her. She brushed a hand against her own face, quickly discovering the wet glob of whipped cream. The moment she felt it, her face turned bright red, and she hastily rubbed it away. "Wh-what do you think you're looking at!?" she snapped, suddenly indignant.

Mokona giggled again, the sound high and tinkling, and seemed completely unruffled by the angry response as she wiped at the whipped cream on her cheek in another deliberately playful mimicry - to make sure they still matched!

Her smile was sweet as she noticed the young woman's blush, and she leaned in encouragingly, propped up on her elbows over her food - as much fun as it is to tease new people, she needed to get to know this person a little better, first! It wouldn't be fun to actually upset her, after all.

“Don't be embarrassed!” She chirped insistently, then grinned and pointed back to herself with one small finger. “Mokona gets food on her face all the time! Especially when the food is really tasty - and this is, isn't it? Much better than before ( ... )

Rita narrowed her eyes when the stranger laughed, still feeling strongly that she was being mocked whether it was intentional or not. "I'm not embarrassed, I'm annoyed," she insisted, though no matter how much she willed it, the redness in her face wouldn't fade as quickly as she wanted.

When the girl leaned all the way over the table to extend a hand to her, Rita turned up her nose at it. Rather than making any move to take the hand, she pulled her plate closer to herself, more concerned that the girl was getting in the way of her meal.

"Rita Mordio," she finally offered after a long pause, as if hoping that would satisfy her enough to get her to back away from Rita's personal space. "... Do you have to lean over the table like that?"

“Ooooh.” Mokona answered, tapping her chin and nodding enthusiastically at the explanation - she knew people turned red for lots of reasons...when they were mad, or when they thought they'd done something silly, and sometimes, when they were drunk! And even though she was mostly sure it was her little game that had brought on the blush, she decided not to push the idea - after all, she'd have to learn more about this new person before she could know what all her reactions meant ( ... )

When Mokona (Rita had made no effort to remember the name, but the number of times the girl herself used it made it impossible not to learn it) backed away, the mage took a few more bites of her food. With how quickly she had been eating earlier, there wasn't much left, and she soon cleaned her plate ( ... )

The little creature-turned-girl slid her tray aside the moment it was clean, and leaned forward again, watching with bright-eyed interest as Rita pulled out the notebook. Her little chin was propped in her hands as she peered between that restlessly tapping pen and the young lady's face, her child-like expression so unyieldingly good-natured that it was obvious that she had either missed the hint in her table-mate's body-language, or had decided to ignore it.

“Mokona loves making friends! All kinds!” she chirped, continuing the conversation without the slightest hesitation. “Its one of this Mokona's special talents!”

She beamed proudly for a moment, then turned her gaze back to the still-blank paper, eyes eager as she waited for its surface to become covered in words or pictures. “What are you writing about? Or are you going to draw?”

Special talents? Yeah, sure, whatever she wanted to think.

When the girl continued to pester Rita with questions, she glanced away from the page, moving her eyes without lifting her head at all. She wasn't backing off easily, was she? What a pain.

"Magic research," she answered simply, then began to write in her near-illegible scrawl. "Formulas for spell-casting. Probably too complicated and boring for you." As it was for the vast majority of people, but Mokona in particular didn't strike Rita as the studious type.

[Ack, sorry for the double post. DX And just wanted to apologize for the delay! D: ]

Mokona's expression grew even cheerier, if that were possible, when Rita's answer finally reached her ears. She quickly leaned up on her knees again, the motion springy and reminiscent of the hops she'd used to move about so often in her original form - though this movement was just restrained enough that she didn't end up sitting on the table. While she'd have normally preferred that more elevated perch for watching someone work and write, the last few days (and more than a few accidents) had started to teach her that there were many places her new, human form wouldn't fit quite as well...

"Magic? Mokona knows lots about magic!" The little creature replied enthusiastically, her smile growing even wider at the prospect of already having so much in common with her new friend. She raised a small finger to her face for emphasis as she continued. "Two very powerful magicians created both Mokonas, and lots of our friends can use spells, too ( ... )

"Y-you?" Rita sputtered, incredulous. She could only stare in disbelief as the girl went on, her mouth hanging open.

Finally, she was able to shake off the surprise long enough to process what she just heard. She nodded slowly at Mokona's question. "Yeah. No one here can use magic during the day, and at night, we're heavily limited. I can't manage more than a couple fireballs, most nights." Last night was a pretty big exception.

But from what Mokona said, she didn't sound like the typical magic-user. And what was that business about 'both Mokonas'?

"If you were created by magicians... does that mean you're not human? And what sort of magic can you use?" If Mokona was originally something other than a human, it could explain her failure to pick up Rita's social cues. And on the other hand, it would give Rita a reason to want to hear what she had to say.

"Uh-huh!" She cheeped in affirmation, giggling brightly at the young woman's disbelief, then leaning closer in sincere interest towards the answer to her question. So it was the same for everyone who had magic here! The thought made her feel a bit better - now she knew that her and her friends weren't being specifically targeted by whoever was in charge of this world ( ... )

Small, with long ears and fur... Rita had already guessed Mokona was some kind of magical being, but what she described was more animal-like than she imagined. And with a jewel as part of her body, which allowed for some sort of communicative ability... It sounded like Mokona was unlike any creature Rita knew of. "So 'Mokona' is both your name and your species... is that right?" Rita asked cautiously, hoping to confirm.

Additionally, it sounded like Yuuko had to be the magician who created her. It was too bad Rita probably wouldn't get to meet her in person. There was probably a lot she could learn from someone like that.

But more interesting than anything were the abilities she then described to Rita. Moving between worlds, sending things to other worlds... if those were Mokona's powers, then...!

Rita leaned in closer. "Mokona," she began slowly, feeling a little hesitant after she'd been so dismissive of the girl minutes ago, "if you got your full powers back, would you be able to help the rest of us get home to our own worlds?"
