Day 42: Hal's Used Cars

Jul 01, 2009 01:14

It was very frustrating, to have the possibility of escape dangled so close to his nose. If he just started running down the street, right now, as fast as he could, some part of his brain actually thought he might make it.

Fortunately the sane parts firmly drowned it out, and then just drowned it for good measure.

Scourge wandered aimlessly down the street, taking in the sound of normal humans going about the work and the smells of...so many things, countless things and none of them useful in the slightest. How frustrating. He could have taken the opportunity to relax if he hadn't constantly felt the invisible nurses watching his back for any sign of treachery. His attention was finally grabbed by a group of cards sitting out by the road. The menacing headlights gave him a start before he saw the "Used Cars" sign and price tags.

Of course, they were just human automatons, empty shells with no minds of their own. Harmless. Scourge approached one and glared at its bumper, daring the dead metal to be sentient to be sentient. He poked it and withdrew quickly, like a child trying to taunt a sleeping dog, then poked it again and finally gave the hood a nice condescending pat. Good dead car, you stay sleeping there like a good boy.

The tracker walked amoung the crowded mass of cars, scanning them for Autobot energy signatures purely out of instinct--a familiar trick for both factions was to hide amoungst human vehicles. That one there could have been Swindle's twin, if it painted was a garish yellow. The red one could have been Dead End, if you changed the back end just a bit. The Datsun was Bluestreak down to the rims. The forms were huge to his tiny human body, but familiar once Scourge looked close enough--and he couldn't quite bring himself to look close for too long.

Better dead cars than live Autobots, but the car lot was starting to feel more like a graveyard.
