Night 48: Church (Ruins)

[from here]

The heavy door seemed to drag as Anise slowly pushed it open, and the girl cringed at the scraping noise it made. To add to her uneasiness, there was a familiar, repugnant smell in the air, though she couldn't recall what it was right away.

Once inside, she scanned the room with her flashlight, revealing an unusual sight. The room was full of people; she could see their hats and hair, most of them facing the altar at the far end of the room.

People? There were people here?

The silence and stillness of the room told Anise that it couldn't be so. And yet, she could see them. There were so many of them, sitting quietly in the pews. Slowly and cautiously, Anise took a few steps down the aisle, then turned and pointed her flashlight to the nearest row. She got one clear look at the face of the nearest person...

And screamed.

Pale, smooth bone was illuminated by her flashlight. There were no lips - just an overstretched grin, or maybe a grimace. Long hair hung loosely from the woman's scalp, with some clumps having fallen to her shoulders. The eyes were nothing but hollowed sockets. It was a horrific sight, and it took Anise a few moments to find her voice again.

"What is this!?" she cried, her gaze frantically shifting from body to body. The others in the row were no better off than the first, and the people across the aisle looked about the same at a glance. "They're... they're all dead."
