Cloud could tell when he entered the hall that they weren't going to find Aerith here either. His heart sunk heavily, but he swallowed and walked forward anyway. It looked like they'd already missed Yuffie and Tifa, but that wasn't much of a surprise.
Most of the rooms appeared empty, their occupants having already left for the evening. Of those that remained, sleeping as so many did, none of them resembled their friend. What little remaining hope he'd had that they might find her here, safe and sound, vanished into nothing.
"Well," he turned to Zack again, somber, "what do you think? Where should we go from here?"
At this point, Zack wasn't all that shocked to discover that the woman hadn't heard anything. He was sure that Aerith had done her best to socialize while she'd been around, but that time had been far too short. There was no way she could have met that many people in her hall, even if she'd wanted to. Granted, the complete lack of answers, except for one small clue from Nunnally, meant that both of them were being forced to acknowledge the facts

So they really didn't have any other leads, it sounded like. Zack's jaw tightened slightly at the admittance, even if it was only mental. He wasn't going to say out loud that she was gone until he knew for sure. Maybe that was immature of him, but giving up on people wouldn't get them anywhere. She'd written him over eighty letters before putting her pen down, and he would do the same. Hypothetically, anyway
