Day 51: Intercom, Evening

Aug 23, 2010 03:54

"Well, that's it for today's activities and hygiene!" The Head Doctor said with a jovial tone just after the sound system's jingle. He seemed excited and maybe even giddy. "Our nurses will now be escorting everyone back to their rooms, and some of you might find that you have brand new roommates to share your dinner with! That's right: we've gotten ( Read more... )

Speaking with Tim so openly had been an odd change from the norm, where he constantly found himself covering his tracks and keeping secrets. Then again, Tim probably knew the basics of how he'd become Two-Face, so he didn't stare at his bandages in wonder or try to pry. Maybe he knew better. The whole situation with the different versions of himself was beyond understanding, but Harvey couldn't stop himself from thinking it over ( ... )

Another day, another night. Lunge walked to his room in silence. Speaking with Morgan had served as a reminder that the avenues of exploration available in the Institute were painfully limited- so far as he could see, the Institute itself held little use save for as a source of supplies. The surrounding area was going to be key. The ruins were potentially interesting, particularly when they had yet to look beyond the church, and the basement was obviously worth investigating now that they had one of the keys and could avoid as much combat as possible (even if 'Coliseum' implied rather more physical action than he was ever going to be capable of). What, though, was to the west? Or the south? North led to Doyleton, and south-east to the ruins, but what else lay in wait outside of the Institute grounds ( ... )

It looked like Lunge was in a talkative mood tonight, if the grand total of ten words that he spoke to him upon entering was worth judging by. Seeing how there had been nights where the man simply sat at his desk and scribbled in his journal, it was significant. Then again, they actually had something specific to discuss this time around ( ... )

And Dent had even closed his notebook so that they could speak. There. Small though it seemed, even the slightest signs of progress were worth noting when it came to their relations. A turn in the chair to set them face-to-face, the easing of tension from shoulders, a few more words spoken and a few less left unspoken: molehills were mountains, if you watched for body language, and so far his roommate's suggested a far brighter picture than it had during their previous exchanges ( ... )

The kitchen, right. Chances were that was just through the cafeteria, which really wasn't far at all. Harvey didn't know how much further in the entrance to the basement was, seeing how he had gotten there the night that the doors were moving people around all over the place, but he imagined it would take more effort than that. Though honestly, they hadn't failed due to a lack of effort. It was more that their group had been too large and they'd had the misfortune of running into a girl who refused to take even a single hit. And Harvey wouldn't have been against smacking her in the face, if that was what it would have taken. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be able to find out ( ... )

So he had at least noticed something was different, even if he hadn't been given much of a chance to process what exactly. He was obviously interested now, though, so Lunge got ready to explain himself. “I have a rough idea of what happened. I'm sure you heard the interference during the Head Doctor's intercom transmission. After that, neither Keman- the young man with us- nor I could understand any of the others. Ryuuzaki-" don't forget the alias, "-was able to translate for me, fortunately, but otherwise...” Hence only reaching the kitchen. He shook his head. "Before that, the man mentioned something about a 'subversive method' of 'inconveniencing' the new radio host. Perhaps it was a way of preventing him from communicating fully with the patients ( ... )

As it turned out, Lunge had a full-blown explanation ready for him. Now they were getting somewhere. Harvey would never admit it to anyone, but he was now wondering why he'd tread so carefully with Lunge in the first place. They clearly were able to help each other out now that they'd opened up even just slightly, but it had taken that push of him revealing the gun and Lunge talking about his experimentation to get there.

So the kid with the weird light thing and Lunge were the ones who'd made trouble. Except that Lunge had been lucky enough to know someone who could manage some German. Seemed like that Ryuuzaki kid was as smart as he'd come off during their one conversation. Harvey was pretty sure Lunge was right about the reasoning behind what had been done, though. It was nice, to have a good idea of why Landel had done something for once ( ... )

This time, Lunge felt fairly safe with assuming that moment's blip was more to do with the oddness of his request rather than any reluctance to help him. To be fair, it probably did sound a little unlikely; he'd only ever had to do it a couple of times in his career, but if he could manage Czech, English wouldn't be too much of a problem. "That's right," he said, nodding curtly. "I only recognised a couple of words, so most of it is sound and what I think I heard. Here-"

With that, he took out his notebook and flicked it open (it didn't especially matter where- he'd only ever used it to give other people notes) on his desk. Then, while one hand held a pencil, the other began to type. Hello everybody... Working out the intonation was more difficult than he'd anticipated, but he didn't expect Dent to put on a fully-fledged performance. He'd have to make do with a simple translation.

Eventually, giving in a final glance, he held out the notebook for his roommate to take. "You'll have to forgive my transcription- I only know a very ( ... )

Well, this was going to be interesting. If the guy was going to transcribe from memory and only by sound (when English barely made any sense, anyway), then Harvey expected he would have a pretty strange document in his hands in a few minutes. While Lunge wrote, though, he simply waited, taking some sips of the shake after all. He could only get a bit more down before he started to find the taste intolerable again ( ... )
