Nightshift 51: M51-M60 Hallway

Aug 28, 2010 01:51

[M57 and the hallway.]The head doctor's mention of sleep studies just got under Zack's skin, but he knew that he couldn't spread himself too thin. It was impossible to be in more than one place at once, obviously, and he'd already dedicated himself to going to the basement. There would be other patients who had decided to help those poor people ( Read more... )

The latter shifts of the day had provided some of the peace Sasuke had sought in the earlier half of it, along with enough information about the subject of interest that he was somewhat less than pleased. He had his suspicions as to whom it was the other patient had referred to on the bulletin board -- the timing was too close for coincidence -- but no way to confirm it without speaking to Muraki himself ( ... )

In the end, Zack ended up waiting around for a bit, which only served to make him antsy. He'd watched his roommate head out before him, laughing quietly to himself when the guy mentioned getting stood up. He didn't think Aidou was the sort to do that, unless something had happened (how long would have to wait before knowing?), and so he tried to relax ( ... )

Aidou was not quite listless, but he certainly had little interest in dinner or the ensuing intercom announcements, short of filing the change of events away in the back of his mind. The only thing he could really take with him during the night that’d keep him connected to whatever was happening with the radio people was the radio itself.

To that end, that night he dressed in the formal, elegant lines of his Night Class uniform and deposited the radio into his jacket pocket. But the flashlight… He chose to left the pretence behind. Something had to shift in this seemingly never-ending imprisonment, and perhaps that change would have to come from him in part. Either way, he felt he had enough eggs to juggle as it was--Zack, Sasuke, the basement trials, the need for a group effort. The vampire was going to need to put the majority of his effort into getting them there this time, not pulling wool over himself ( ... )

It was unlike Aidou to be late, and Sasuke expected the footsteps that approached him right away -- but the voice that followed them was definitely not Aidou's. He blinked, matched name to voice, and nodded to acknowledge the man without moving from his spot by his own door.

"I assume you're in the same hall?" But before he could quite move on to answer the next question, Aidou answered it himself.

Reliable in a way people and physical locations here weren't. Sasuke was somewhat disappointed himself -- he'd hoped to speak with Aidou longer than that brief breakfast had allowed -- but conversation was hardly impossible before entering the basement. He pushed away from the wall, the ornamental sword held parallel to his more practical weapon.

"Shall we go?"

It was almost like Aidou had read his mind. Maybe two seconds after the kid's name had left his mouth, he showed up just like that. And... it looked like all of them were roomed in the same hallway! What were the chances of that, and how hadn't they figured it out earlier? It certainly made things handy, and it seemed that he'd made the right choice by throwing his cards in with these two.

Aidou was dressed up, too, and it made Zack once again wish for something a little more interesting than his happy face ensemble. The SOLDIER uniform had been both comfortable and practical, so he did miss it in that respect. Still, there was no use whining when there wasn't much he could do about it, and they had places to go.

"It looks like we all are," he said with a quick smile as he glanced from one kid to the other. It seemed that everyone was ready, and so he didn't hesitate to lead them down the hall.
