Ilia didn't like the idea of walking up into the darkness, but if they had to for supplies she would risk it. She kept ahead of Anise on the stairs, each step cautious but deliberate. It was like walking through a cave but it lacked the natural ambiance. If she could describe the atmosphere, 'eerie' was the only word that came to mind.
To think that someone would attack a fellow prisoner! And a young girl, at that! Well, Anise hadn't admitted to being attacked personally, but that didn't leave Ilia feeling any more secure. Ilia had a great deal of self-control, but that kind of thing made her want to cut loose and just punch something. "That's just sickening! Anise, if you ever feel threatened, make sure you come to me straightaway." She'd take care of anyone disgusting enough to go after a young girl.
"I know you have your artes," Ilia continued, guiding them farther up, "but no one should have to face an attacker like that on their own."
