Night 51: Doctor's Office 5 [Dr. Suresh]

...

Well. von Karma had to give this Mohinder Suresh credit for one thing: the so-called doctor kept his office very tidy and well organized. Perhaps had the man given a more professional air, or more importantly, had he not been working for the Head Lunatic, von Karma might have found him more credible. But without so much as a framed sheepskin on the wall proclaiming Suresh's authority to practice medicine and treat patients, von Karma had to regard him as a charlatan.

The only reason he was in here now was to gather proof that would bolster his malpractice case against the Institute. So far, all he could find upon a first cursory glance was evidence that this man was little more than a public high school biology teacher, if the trite skeleton model was any indication.

He examined every corner, every nook and cranny to make sure that there was nothing dangerous hiding in this room, before conducting a full search. There was nothing on the walls save for a bulletin board, a map of the world attached to it. At least one thing, it proved that this Landel's Institute was indeed located on the planet earth. ...Curious that he was even entertaining such a thought; two weeks ago, he would have never even considered it. Then he checked the desk. Unlike the time of his "therapy session," the top of the desk was completely bare, as were its drawers. What kind of medical practitioner emptied his entire desk every night? One who was suspect of fraud, of course!

Now von Karma went to the bookcase, the final structure that he could investigate in this small office. As he scanned the neatly-shelved offerings, he realized that his initial impression that "Dr." Suresh was a biology teacher was partly correct... half of the textbooks taught genetics and evolution, but the rest were devoted to the "metaphysics."

No degree in display, an empty desk, and books on the paranormal. von Karma's verdict? A fraud, just as he suspected.

To add to his dossier of concrete evidence for his case against Martin Landel for medical malpractice, von Karma plucked one of the volumes on the occult from the bookshelf and slipped it in one of his coat pockets.* They were almost filled to capacity, so one book was all he could take for now. No matter. It was sufficient for arguing that Mohinder Suresh was too much of a crackpot himself to practice psychiatry.

Having completed his investigation of this office, von Karma returned to the corridor and headed back to the main hallway.
