Jack slept so rarely that when it did happen Ianto would force himself to stay awake, no matter how tired he was. He always found it worth it, even on the nights Jack had nightmares. It scared him, to see Jack so vulnerable, but in a strange way it comforted him too, acted as a reminder that alien as he was in many ways, Jack was just as human as he. And he liked being the one to bring Jack back to reality. Jack had saved him in more ways than he'd ever realised, and Ianto liked being able to repay that, even in the smallest possible ways.

But it was the nights Jack was peaceful that made it most worth it. The years that could sometimes be seen in Jack's face faded away, and Ianto often found himself wondering about the things he was dreaming. Often he hoped it was about him, but there were others when he lay wondering the things Jack might dream that he himself would never see. Much as Ianto enjoyed Jack's often outlandish stories, he found he liked imagining just as much. Things or places he'd seen referenced in the archives, and how Jack might have seen them before he'd come here.

And on other nights, just as rare, Ianto found himself kept awake by Jack's eyes on him, wondering if Jack thought just the same as him.
