Dan: Many thanks for sharing this. My folks and yours would have enjoyed each other's company.

My dad enjoyed beer and vodka-based cocktails; my mom was more a Manhattan and whiskey sour gal. I didn't get the ice cream toppings you mention, but from an early age I was asked to fetch beers for my dad and no one had a fit if I tasted it on the way.

I'm not sure if it was vodka-based, but my dad always enjoyed a Tom Collins in the warmer weather months. I used to drink the Tom Collins mixer - reminded me of Fresca, if memory serves.

yeah, a sip of a cocktail would probably get parents sent to prison for child endangerment nowadays...

Glad you liked it. My mom always thought of herself as something of a separate, distinct species if you will.
She was first and foremost a Savannian, secondly a resident of Chatham county, and third, a Georgian. To her, that made some sort of huge difference in social hierarchy.
