Cartooning was an interest, one of those passive burning dreams like tending a bar or being a hitchhiking backpacking travel writer. Filled with fleeting thoughts of "I could do that, I should do that" before the realization that it's hard and takes work, like everything else. The obvious weakness of it is that I used passive voice and sentence fragments "artistically" as a crutch to avoid having to bother developing any kind of character.

Mm. I'm actually a big fan of passive voice as a way to establish tone. And there are sentence fragments but the fact that there is no character to me makes me instantly generalize - you've described a common experience, and so everyone sees themselves in what you've written. I know I did. I wish I could remember who it reminds me of.
