Attending a session about evolution of written language, signs and symbols. Interesting examples of historical and recent symbols. Some highlights:

@ - used to mean price per item in accounting, now implies location

# - means "context," group, event, topic, something happening

It's a picture of a hot beverage? I just like that there's a unicode character for that, is all. Like, why is there a snowman? Why is there not a top hat, or an iconic representation of a daishiki?

Are you saying it's an example of a character that was appropriated to mean hot beverage, or it was created to look like a hot beverage and that is its denotative meaning?
