While I still qualify for the student discount, do I put out the cash for a serious laptop upgrade?

I have a video ipod and a touch. I have not used the video since I got the touch. The main reason not to get the touch is if you know you need the storage. Other reason is you can skip songs by touch using the wheel control (touch has volume on the side, other things take the screen).

Touch has a larger screen (for video), can run apps from the app store, can use wireless networks for online stuff.

OMG iTouch.

Because the ability to check your email virtually anywhere is gorgeous. And because it's absolutely tiny, has superb battery life and sound quality, and more apps than you can shake a stick at, if you were the stick-shaking-at-apps type.

I just made the same upgrade and I loooooooooooooooooove the MacBook Pro. It is so shiny that its shininess shines. I got the Touch and it's cute but so far it's really just a twitter appliance for me. However, for free, I will take it.

I have a classic and an iphone, but if I didn't already have both of those, and storage wasn't a problem, I'd go for the iTouch. Also, if I'm reading correctly, the first of the Macbook Pro you list is actually worse than your current machine in some ways. I have always tried not to downgrade when I buy a new machine, but if it's not something you care about, then it probably doesn't matter. It really depends a lot on what you are running.
Almost halving your storage space on your laptop seems like a bad plan though. As we progress, programs seem to keep bloating, and you'll only need more space.
I replaced my black 13" macbook with a 17" macbook pro, and am VERY happy with it.
