I use Washington Mutual. They've got free checking, and I've had no problems so far. Plus, they have a 24 hour 800 number that I can use to check my balance, transfer money between accounts, or see if checks have gone through with no extra fee at all.

WaMu is the only completely free checking. Everyone else requires a minimum balance or some other limitation like direct deposit. Though they have gotten a little weird themselves lately. In order to get the free checking, I had to have a Savings Account, and it automatically sends $25 a month to my savings account. If there isn't $25 there, it'll charge me a $3 fee instead and move on. There is no minimum balance, and I can immediately transfer the money back into checking if I want, without penalty. It's weird, but it'll likely inspire me to save money for a change. I've always had good service from WaMu, and they have really cool banks. Not to mention, lots of banks and ATM machines all over the place.
