I guess this is your final clue that getting the heck out of your current situation is the best way to get away from financial doom. (And it only causes me more fear on owning a credit card. My mom was telling me the other day I ought to have one, but at this time in our economic crisis, I'm happier to take my chances without one.)
What with rising rates and the possibility the Obama administration will change the very nature of how credit even works (nevermind it almost collapsed entirely late this last year), no, I don't think I will. If I have the money, I will spend it. I never understood how we got into the practice of thinking that it's best to spend money we do not have for things we want, all in order to later use money we don't have for things we need.
It's usually the only way to build credit though, unless you get lucky and find another way. Without credit, you'll never be able to buy a car or house unless you pay for the whole thing in cash. It's sad but true.

Also, its good to have a credit card, if only to build good credit. Just use it to buy gas or something, then pay it off right away.
