So I found this really awesome tutorial on the internet on making maps with Photoshop and I decided to try it out. I ended up making a pretty good one in about 3 hours. Here is the result (and as a warning, it's a pretty hefty-sized picture).

There's a thread here where there are links to download it. I'm not sure if you have to be registered there to download them, but you do have to be registered to see the samples there. Also, the thread has a lot of helpful hints in it, where people asked questions when they got stuck.
