Or set a fire.

But is there hot water? Get in the tub with a good paperback and a drinky-winky.

Mercy, you're the queen I stole it from! Ages, ago, dearie. I stole it ages ago.

I've been to her Musuem in Rio three times, and even to the little parish church outside Oporto where she was baptized. We worship Carmen.

Oh no! That's terrible. I used to live in a building with heat/water issues. I hope it gets resolved soon!

It's been a problem all week, but one phone call to the city and it's amazing how quickly everything's been fixed!

The one very nice thing about the People's Republic of China is that my landlady is now scared to death of all forms of official intervention. She got one phone call from them and the crew was here in 90 minutes.

after observing that the heat almost invariably "failed" on one of the coldest days of the year, I came to this conclusion.

If there are, say, 10 days of the year in NYC that are super-cold and the heat "fails" on one, then the landlord can trim his heating bill by 10%.

It's math.

True, there are sometimes boiler problems, but sometimes the "problems" were fixed so quickly it was hard to believe it.

Oh absolutely. But this was a simple maintainence issue about which they'd been advised several times in advance and which the landlady alleged misunderstanding due to language difficulties. Which could be true because I know from East Asian girls and ESL issues in my classroom, nu?

Regardless, one call from the city and the fear of the state kicked in, and now I'm toasty warm.
