Problem: Using Vista (some might stop here and say that THAT is the issue).. My volume and network icon have both disappeared from the system tray (bottom right) and when I go into the taskbar options via control panel the options to "always show" them are greyed out. Thankfully my laptop has external volume controls.. but having to go to control

You could always do a system restore to a time when you knew that the systems mentioned were working, if they're still greyed out then you might have to download the software from the internet? I find problems like that the are the precursor to more problems.

The other option would to do a complete defrag of the harddrive and components and see if that throws anything out of the ordinary to your antivirus; that takes time though, and might not work...?

Actually the options came back to life when I restarted :)
