Separation of church and state

I think very little of Christine O'delaware.  When I do think of her, I think of her as a sad, shrill, deluded little creature who believes too much in her own righteousness to be capable of compassion, let alone governance.  I think she is another Palin-esque figure-head...and I mean that literally...a totemic wooden woman's likeness that has been ( Read more... )

This is one of the reasons I <3 Slacktivist. As someone who grew up in that boxed-in Evangelical subculture he can reveal a lot about the particular writings and figures that fuel those sorts of beliefs. He didn't cover CO'D re: Church and State (except in a YouTube link and a 'wow') but has covered her claims to practicing Witchcraft and claims to having 'dabbled in' Hare Krishna in a way that was very illuminating about the bubble those statements were fostered in.

He does have some general posts about the separation of Church and State that come at the issue from all different angles. Here is a pretty good one he did earlier this year. Lovely quote:

[They] like to think that their particular religion is protected by the First Amendment while other, less widely held religions are merely "permitted," merely tolerated out of a benign condescension. But the First Amendment does not make or allow for any such distinction.

And another interesting take he did against derisive claims that Obama was a "secularist" President, which borders on reductio ad absurdum but does raise a very interesting question.
