HEY DOMINIC I WROTE YOU AN ESSAY

Jun 06, 2010 17:32

...except it's really more of a relationship... timeline? Thing? That goes over Anemone's thoughts on Dominic through camp and immediately relevant canon.

CANON:
Lala a section mostly for my reference. My interpretation of canon! So Anemone came to camp after episode 43, which means the last time she saw him in canon, Dominic did two things:

1. He brought her a flower, said that he would do his best to save her from her awful situation, and then kissed her. Anemone, being depressed and bitchy, bit him and told him how much he fails.
2. After this, he drove her to a big party of and then never picked her up again! The last time we see her, she's sitting alone in a dark ballroom waiting for him.

The flower scene influenced a lot of the way she thought of Dominic in camp! So I will just go through it for my own reference and idk maybe I'll keep this section when I unlock the essay. WHO KNOWS?

So Anemone is a bit of a drama queen! She's selfish and loooooves attention. And when she's depressed, she's even more dramatic than usual. Even though the situation TOTALLY WARRANTS IT, Anemone's “:( my liiiife :(" still has elements of a pity party that is really, really hard to get her out of. When Dominic gives her the flower, she accuses him of getting an anemone on purpose, because it means ~death of hope~ and he is telling her she fails. SHE KNOWS THIS IS FALSE. He brought her flower because it is pretty and he liek her. But accusing him allows her to emphasize how sad her life is bawww. Basically she is in an awful mindset.

And then she spells out for Dominic that he really doesn't know very much about her situation! She's told him this before, but he never seems to get it. No matter how many times she says "If I fail Dewey I am dead meat" he continues on being all ":D :D I CAN BE YOUR HERO BAAABYY." WHICH IS WRONG no, you can't, you loser :E Stop acting like you know enough about the situation!!! He doesn't know what she's been through. So when he acts all heroic it drives her nuts because he wouldn't feel that way if he knew that she was a pale imitation of an Coralian made for fighting! And that Dewey is crazy and she's going to die probably anyway!

All of the above can be summarized as: Anemone's knowledge of Dominic's general ignorance and her awful mood means the correct answer to “will you save me” is NOT "~of course~ [MACKS ON]"

And then she lectures him and he goes off! He drives her to the party and then never shows up. WHICH BRINGS US TO:

CAMP:
Anemone got sent to camp maybe a day after the events in 43. And Dominic isn't there! And doesn't show up for... a really long time.

At first she was just really, really pissed at him. A summer camp! Full of zombies! DOMINIC THIS ISN'T MY AREA OF EXPERTISE WHERE ARE YOU. But he continued to... not show up. And Anemone, who has very little faith in the staying power of relationships (which is why she's never opened up to people who she considers really good friends in camp! But that is another essay), saw his continued absence as evidence that he had ditched her because she'd yelled at him in canon. She blamed herself, not camp, for Dominic not showing up.

So for a really long time Anemone was pretty sure she had been dumped in camp by Dewey as a convenient way of getting rid of her, and Dominic had decided to go along with it. No matter how many times people told her that maybe Dominic was coming, hadn't noticed he was gone yet, etc. etc., she didn't believe them. Because Anemone is all about her! And she is special, so until proof showed up that those camp principals were relevant to her, she wasn't about to be convinced.

Meanwhile, camp let her grow up a little! She had to learn to be nice(...nicer) to people in order to get what she wanted and not be completely lonely. Along the way she had a few crushes that she kind of ignored for the same reasons she yelled at Dominic-- nobody in camp really knew anything about her (and if they did, they wouldn't care), she was going to go home to probably die, that kind of thing! But she still got to know people, and made adjustments to her world view accordingly. Character development, basically! A couple of times, when she would mention Dominic in conversation, people asked her if she was dating him or cared about him at all, which made her think about her feelings before pushing it to the back of her mind. Because...

...he wasn't there! Which reinforced her idea that he didn't actually care about her and, okay, maybe biting is not the appropriate reaction to a flower. That made her kind of a jerk, but he gave her a flower and never showed up, so he was still the bigger jerk. Right? Right.

DOMINIC GET:
THEN... HE SHOWED UP! And lo and behold, she had not been abandoned forever! Camp really did mess with the timestream. Which was both a relief and sort of annoying, since she couldn't be mad at him. She was just happy that he was there, to be bossed around and basically act as her support system. He also wasn't trying to talk about awkward stuff like flowers and feelings! Hooray! Camp became less terrible, and Anemone had to remind herself to be a jerk to him more often because while she was ecstatic to see him, being too nice may make him think she cares about him or something. But she still had to balance the jerkitude with helping him navigate camp and not die horribly.

And that worked until Christmas! At which point he told her he like liked her and kissed her again. And more importantly, she found out he was from an entirely different point in time. He was before the flower fiasco! Which fffff, why. This time, Anemone didn't react quite as badly. Because she wasn't in the ~drama mode~ and because... if she was awful to him again, he might leave her! Again! And so there was awkwardness and then she just... went with it. IGNORING FEELINGS!!! and hoping that things would magically stop being awkward. Luckily he went with it and she started to enjoy just chillin' with him.

THEN SURPRISE CULTISTS! During which Dominic dragged her to the hospital and managed to be surprisingly badass about it. She revised her core impression of him, which is basically... naive guy who is pretty ineffective at most things. In an endearing way. So now I'll just quote the big ol' relationship meme because I'm getting tired of typing:

It is kind of hilarious that Dominic's update is going to make him feel way less capable when lately Anemone's been thinking the complete opposite! She actually thought he did pretty well during the who cult fiasco. She's gotten used to weathering those types of events alone and so having someone be there was new and exciting! It showed that Dominic could kind of be trusted to be there for her. Meanwhile the Loveless fights have shown that he's not as wimpy as she thought! He is actually...sort of badass!? what is this?!?! And they made a pretty good team and he didn't suck and maybe she was wrong about him being an idiot.

So after the loveless fights, which were super great for her, Anemone was in a pretty good mood and Dominic had increased his standing in her eyes.

UPDATE:
And then he goes and remembers all the awkward stuff. Shocking! Anemone's used to that happening to other people in camp, but like most of the time, expected herself to be an exception from camp's madness.

The irritating thing is that he apologized for the kiss. Which was not the point! If anything, it made her feel worse because that was something she had resigned herself to feeling bad about. It's something she should have apologized for! Not him! What he should feel bad about is abandoning her after the party. And he said he does, sure, but surprise! He didn't leave her because she yelled at him! He left because he was going to ~help her~.

Which brings me way back to the beginning! Dominic has become more sensible in her mind, but as far as she knows, he still doesn't know squat about the whole situation. He went and tried to play hero, after she had told him that was a terrible idea! The fact that he admits that he failed reinforces her idea that she's stuck in her situation forever.

All of that she could forgive and, even though she'd be depressed for a little while because he brought up the whole Dewey is crazy! Anemone gonna die! Thing, she could go back to repressing it in camp. And maybe things could even have be normalish, now that Dominic found out about the flower thing.

But! But apparently he didn't actually learn anything? Anemone's resigned to Dewey's plan, but Dominic isn't, and he's still going to... maybe not do something about it, but disregard Dewey's opinions. Which Anemone knows is suicidal. She yelled at him for it, and he didn't get it at all. Her first making him promise that he'd stick by her even though he failed and then yelling at him when he ignored the fact that she said he was going to die is, for her, really close to admitting that she cares! Which he didn't get because he is not psychic or a tsundere, but that still really bugs her. It takes a lot for her to say things like that.

So now her plan is to think things out. He's going to ignore Dewey? Fine! She just has to decide out how to get him to stop being heroic and noble and thereby be not-so-suicidal. She figures that she has the time, because he seemed pretty sincere when he said he'd stick by her, and camp offers nothing if not time for thinking.

TL;DR:

Dominic is stupid and feelings suck.
