Boston Comicon

Brian and I had decided to split the weekend up for BCC this year. He had a weekend pass and went alone on Saturday, and we went as a family on Sunday (Mina is still young enough to be free). We bought our passes but both 'trooped' in an official capacity for the 501st. The SW groups had a trash compactor w/ Dianoga setup and an action figure ( Read more... )

It's weird. I'm sort of wary of raising Bram up in any sort of 'geek' tribe, whether it's costuming or the professional writing circles I've been running in. Not necessarily because I'm ashamed of it or anything like that, but I want to make sure that he's exposed to it in addition to a lot of other things outside of Fandom.

I can appreciate not wanting to 'brainwash'. I figure, it's rare that we go to these things out of 52 weekends in a year. She's going to take dance classes too. Part of course because I did, but she seems to really enjoy it (dancing/singing around the house on her own). She asks to go up to the studio often and I've told her we'll go back next month. Of course, that could be the big basket of lollipops talking, too. :)

I am trying to introduce her to things that aren't my strong suit as we go. I also hope that she gets some exposure from school.

We are already seeming to come up against that 'girls don't like boys things' at school. It isn't a problem, but the older boys in the preschool room comment how odd it is that she's a girl, a young one at that, and she knows and likes comic characters or Star Wars or whatever. She'll move into that classroom this fall, and so we'll see how that goes. Her peers in the toddler room don't seem to be very aware or vocal about any of this.

I've wondered about that. I've been reading books to Bram (and making a point to read stories about girls as well), and he's certainly going to be exposed to a lot of geek stuff as he grows up. Brainwashing is a good term, and in general, I'm resistant to the idea that someone should be fully, 100% invested in any community or group, because that tends to cut you off from other things. I can't imagine writing fiction without doing work here at Norwich or being interested in Geology, for example.

And, it's awesome for Mina to be interested in comic books and Star Wars. I can't wait to see if she'll get a tiny stormtrooper outfit to show the boys up!
