the one time i was carless in Blacksburg in the summer, i ended up begging my parents for a car for the reasons you state above: bus doesn't run as often, and so i could go hiking.
it's easy to feel stuck inside without a mode to go elsewhere. if you have close friends in the area with a car and a desire to go hiking, though, it wouldn't be so bad.
i think it depends more on where you're staying... that one summer, i was too far from campus to walk, so i had to ride the bus/drive to get to summer classes. but if you're close enough to campus and downtown to walk, then you'll also likely be fine... except when it rains, that is!
as for the drive up from florida, my brother has made it lots of times, so i can ask him for suggestions if thats the way you're doing it.
yep, very full summer. I'm pretty excited and looking forward to doing something different.
hmmm... I am leaning towards having my car. Although, I'll be pretty near campus --I'll be staying in Hunley's place on Green St. It's nice to have the flexibility in transportation and not rely on others to get around.
I guess I've always had a car in the summer--but rarely any other time. I'd recommend, especially if you don't know lots of people to drive you around anymore.
Also: you should try to stay a little longer. I'm hoping to be in Blacksburg around August 11th and 12th, methinks.
Yea, I only know a couple of people still in BBurg. And even so it can be a hassle to have to rely on them to drive me around, especially if the busses don't run much.
Ooh! There's another reason to have the car ---the flexibility in deciding when to leave. I'm pretty sure I could stay a few days longer. Let me know if you do plan to be in the area. I'd love to see you!!
If it sways you in either way, both myself and my gf Tanya have cars... and well, I work a whole lot, but I can always take you somewhere if you need to hit up a market.
