Been working on some genealogy lately.   I found out yesterday that Roger is a first cousin 9 times removed to George Washington.  When I told him, he said it was silly, but I think that it's  fascinating.  It doesn't really mean anything, but it's kind of nice to know that you have a personal connection to a historical figure.  My family is mostly ( Read more... )

That is interesting, really!

A cousin traced my maternal grandfather's line back to their arrival on this continent in 1710, but since they're all mostly named John or William coming up to current time through that line, it's a bit confusing! :-)

Sometimes it's very confusing, especially before the twentieth century, when spelling was not standardized. You could be looking at multiple people who all turn out to be the same.

The names all have birth and death progressing through the decades and they were mostly prolific with having children (mostly NOT named John or William), they just weren't very imaginative with names. :-)

I only have one known famous relative, Will Rogers, from my mother's mother's side of the family (My grandmother was Melissa Rogers). I'm not quite clear whether Will was her uncle or they were cousins, but that's the Cherokee link in my family history.
