This is exceptionally good news. First, the broad split across various ideologues means that there is no unifying issue for the Republican base; and second, none of these candidates have any chance of beating an incumbent in a Presidential race, because they're personal views are so polarizing. As long as Obama doesn't go completely crazy, he wins against any combo of this field.

In terms of being able to unite the Republican base while not offending the independents (two factors required to win against Obama) the most viable in this field is Romney; but I think the extreme right wing will ensure he does not get the GOP nomination. In effect, the tea party, which helped the GOP win the house, will also be the anchor that prevents them from fielding a winning Presidential candidate in 2012.

Eeek. Can't correct the typos if you don't have a paid account, which I don't. So I'll just have to leave the schoolboy howlers in that post. I blame it on lack of coffee... :-)

Oh I absolutely agree with you. It would be the best possible outcome. However, I still think it's a matter of extreme idiocy to even consider someone like Trump to be presidential material.
