The silence stretches between them like a vast ocean as an unusual awkwardness settles over the room. Bastian’s grateful when the kettle goes, as it gives him something to do other than staring at the wall, the ceiling, the oven, anywhere that’s not Lukas. He fusses with the mugs and coffee, before handing a mug to Lukas, who smiles gratefully at him. Bastian doesn’t smile back.
Lukas scratches the back of his neck, before finally breaking the silence, “So, I guess he told you then”
Bastian continues to stare at a speck of dirt on the fridge, to the right of Lukas’ head. “I already knew”
Lukas opens his mouth to say something, but the pain in his best friend’s eyes shuts it again.
“When were you going to tell me? Did you really think you could keep it a secret from me?”
Again Lukas makes as if to say something, but thinks better of it; there’s nothing he could possibly say right now to make things better. Still Bastian refuses to look at him.
“I suspected it for a while. The way you were with him, the looks you gave him, the way you two would sneak off, just like we used to.” Guilt twists inside Lukas like a knife at those last few words, he reaches out, but Bastian simply shrinks away from his touch. “Then you became preoccupied when we were together, always like your mind was somewhere else, I knew something was up, you tried to hide it, but we both know you’re a crap liar” Lukas laughed, he was sure he even saw a flicker a of a smile across Bastian’s face, but it was gone quicker than it came, a flicker, then he was back to his blank stare. “I decided to follow you one night, when the two of you went off when no one was looking, I followed you upstairs to his room, you left the door open. I saw everything.” Lukas can see the tears in Bastian’s eyes, the pain strewn across his face, and he hates himself for having done this to him.
“Sorry” It’s weak and sounds pathetic even to Lukas own ears.
Bastian tenses at the words and finally, finally he allows himself to look at Lukas. His eyes pierce through Lukas’s, the mixture of pain and hatred searing straight through Lukas’s heart. His lips are pursed, and he’s shaking. Again Lukas reaches out to him, but Bastian turns away, slamming his mug down on the counter and bending over it, head in his hands. “Just get out!”he shouts, “Just get out” The second is barely above a whisper, yet Lukas can’t tell which is worse. All he knows is he’s no longer welcome, he takes a deep breath, he wants nothing more than to go over and hold the older man, chase he demons, take away the pain, protect him in his arms, but instead he turns and walks slowly towards the door. One last look back at Bastian’s crumpled shape, and it takes all his strength not to fall apart himself.
