I was a missionary in Romania for four and a half years (just returned last December).

Oddly enough, when I was younger (high school-ish) I started having this goal that someday I would learn all of the major Romance languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. I had already studied French (and was an exchange student there; that's why that one and Romanian are the best), Spanish, and Italian, and was sure that I could pick Portuguese up somewhere, but couldn't for the life of me figure out where I would learn Romanian! I said (only 3/4 jokingly) that part of the reason I moved there was to learn the language. Still haven't picked up Portuguese yet, though....

Do you happen to be a language person too?

You could go on mission to Brazil next, that should do it. :)

I am terrible at languages, I think I am rather hard wired for my native tongue. I wish I did know more, but even in grade school I found spoken languages incredibly hard to learn; ended up taking Latin, and becoming fairly good at it (because you don't have to speak it conversationally, see.) Welsh was really pretty ludicrous, and I'm still pretty limited to phrases like "How are you," "I don't know" and "Do you like coffee?" Been thinking about trying one of those Rosetta stone programs, just to see if their approach is more successful for me...

I do know a few words of Portugese! Bom dia, obrigado... that's about it.
