Things that should have been a post

* Game of Thrones--a lovely adaptation that has emphasized and deepmhasized various parts of the book in a way that make complete sense for TV. This show is absolutely unprecedented in the way it has been faithful to a narrative while picking and choosing the details, and I think GRRM's television experience is a huge help. It's also a huge help ( Read more... )

The dog walker posts these pictures to Facebook and I am often struck, as I look at them from my cubicle, by how much better his life is than mine! (Murphy's, I mean. But possibly also the dog walker's.)

There are a lot of differences, most of them stylistic. But it's also strange, to an American reader, how standardized the ingredients seem to be. They will blithely call for one slice of fish or one package of mushrooms because these things are sold in a very standard way in Japanese grocery stores, whereas here there would be lots of different package sizes and there is no standard for a serving/slice of fish.

Also, while we think of ketchup as a low-brow condiment, it's used quite often there to season dishes, as part of stir-fries, etc., at least in bento dishes, which I found rather jarring at first!

Agree entirely on Game of Thrones. It's a great adaptation.

aw HI MURPHY! He looks like he's having a ball. (He also looks like he's filled out maybe? I seem to recall him seeming much leaner in previous pictures. I may be misremembering though, or it's just the angle.)

I feel like the dogwalker does have a better life...

I think it's the angle. When you look at him head-on it's obvious that he's very narrow, but from the side he looks more lab-shaped.

I can't get over how, knowing exactly what is happening, I am still on the edge of my seat waiting to see how they're going to do it.
