Why is it that it'd be so incredibly rude and inappropriate of someone to say something about the way an overweight person looks, but it's okay for friends and family to barrage me with insults about being too thin, freely and without hesitation, as if it were any less discourteous or offensive?

the thing is I'm working so hard on gaining the weight. I really am. I think people just don't think it's offensive because being too thin isn't considered a problem, like you said. But it's a big stinkin double standard. Le sigh.
