Chapter VIII: Game On

Luke finished off his glass of wine. He was in the back of Steffies: a small club he liked to get away to. Luke checked his watch for the time. He had turned off his phone for the day. He was aware that Noah’s car (and Noah) had been recovered by now and he was most likely being bombarded with phone calls. But he couldn’t deal with it right now. He looked across the smoky rooms at the couples dancing.

“Luke this is a really bad idea: atrociously bad, colossally bad. Worst idea since Spam.” Noah insisted.

Luke laughed and threw back a shot, “Noah Snyder-Jones…are you being a chicken shit?”

Noah pursed his lips and pointed at Luke, “I am no chicken shit.”

Luke smirked and held out his hand, “Prove it.”

“You’ll regret this.” Noah warned.

“I will not.”

“Famous last words.” Noah said as the newlyweds made their way to the dance floor.

Noah was right: Luke ended up with badly bruised feet by the end of the night.

“Sss…careful.” Luke hissed hours later as Noah placed yet another bag of ice on his swollen feet.

“I am so sorry.” Noah apologized.

“How does one suck this bad?” he asked.

“I warned you.” Noah retorted.

He walked over to the couch and gingerly raised Luke upwards and then sat down behind him allowing Luke to rest comfortably on him.

“You have to make it up to me.”

Noah kissed the top of his head, “Name it.”

Luke smirked, “When my feet get feet size…Papa wants a foot rub.” Luke said knowing Noah’s distaste for anything feet related barring their intended use.

Noah’s laugh echoed down Luke’s spine. He encased Luke in his arms and planted another head kiss, “Deal.”

Luke inhaled a shuddery breath and wiped the prickling of tears he hadn’t realized were there. He pushed back his chair and was ready to leave: he had ignored the outside world long enough.

“Weren’t thinking of leaving without a dance were you?” Luke froze at the voice. He looked up and there he was unmistakable, his hand held out to Luke.

“You…you don’t dance.”

Noah smiled and cocked his head to the side, “That’s the first thing you say?”

He took Luke’s hand and led him to the dance floor just Assassin’s Tango by Rudolph Valentino began to play.

“Special request just for you.” Noah whispered in Luke’s ear as he moved to the rhythm easily. Luke tried backing away after recovering from his shock but Noah pulled him closer…and kept him there.

“How…?” Luke started.

Noah pressed his cheek to Luke’s and whispered, “It’s gonna take a lot more than that sweetheart.”

Noah kissed the spot under Luke’s earlobe and let him go. He backed up, winked, and walked out confidently.
Luke heard the ticking getting louder and faster and looked around wondering why only he could hear it. Then he started digging in his pockets and finally unearthed a small, silver ball…with a timer.

“Fuck.” Luke ripped off his jacket, draped it over his arm and power walked out of the club so as not to attract any more attention. Once outside, he wrapped up the bomb in the jacket and launched it upwards just as it exploded. He watched the charred remnants of his jacket cascade to the ground, “Son of a bitch. How the fuck is he alive?”

Noah noticed the other car almost right away. He had been behind him for a while now, always maintaining a specific distance. Any other person would have dismissed it, but Noah wasn’t any other person. He continued to drive at the same speed occasionally slowing down or accelerating to gauge the other car’s reaction: he knew it was Luke.

“What are you up to?” Just as Noah reached the middle of the bridge, he felt the impact of his tire blowing out…more like exploding. He lost control of the vehicle temporarily and just as he was regaining control, there was another explosion. This time Noah couldn’t help but swerve madly before hitting the temporary barrier and plunging into the water below.

It was hard not to panic when he was in the water. But he managed to slow down his heart beat and calm down. He fought the instinct to rip out his seat belt and easily removed it. The water was slowly coming in, but not too much. Noah took off his watch and wrapped it around his knuckles, then he cocked his arm back and punched the center of the window effectively smashing it in one go. He didn’t give himself much time to register the pain.

He took a huge gulp of air and escaped through the broken window. Noah didn’t go directly to the surface. He was aware that the person who just ran him off the road would be waiting to see if he resurfaced. So he stayed a good deal under the surface and swam away from the car until the sunlight had faded. He knew now that he was under the bridge and safe from view. Only then did he come up for air.

Noah let the phone ring a few times before he answered, “Still alive dear?”

“You tried to blow me up you bastard.” Luke growled into the phone.

“You wouldn’t have died. Minor abrasions.” Noah reassured.

“You sure you want to start this?” Luke challenged.

“I’m gonna finish it.”

“You’re not gonna like what happens.” Luke warned.

“Game on, Luciano.” Noah said before hanging up the phone.
