I figured most of you would have heard about this by now, but I mentioned it to a couple of people at Afters, and got nothing but blank stares, so I'm posting.
Susan Boyle, a dumpy, unemployed 47 year old woman from a village in the middle of nowhere
went on "Britain's Got Talent", and seriously kicked ass. If you haven't watched the

I'm sorry, but I am of the opinion that part of being in the entertainment industry is modifying your looks, not so that you look like someone else, but so that you put your best foot (or face) forward. Would it kill her to try to make her outward appearance match her inner pizazz?
I do understand that she has some kind of mental issues ... maybe this affects her metabolism/appearance, but this is going to be one of the things she will have to overcome. There is a slight possibility that she can make her current look work for her. But I definitely think that she needs to pay attention to her wardrobe and lose at least 10 pounds. Her challenges in this competition will be related to getting people to take her appearance seriously, which is worlds easier than struggling with vocal issues.
I love the judges reactions in the video though LOL!
She's got an amazing voice, and I think she has a chance at being a star only because she's on Britain's Got Talent, rather than American Idol.

If she "makes it", I expect that eventually she will get a "makeover". But for now I think "this is who I am, deal with it" works for her.
And she'll need to lose more than 10 lbs to make any difference.
Yeah. I really loved the "OMG, she doesn't suck" looks as she first started to sing.

The reactions of the judges are exactly what you would expect from people expecting crap, and getting a diamond. All their body language is consistent with that response.
I've done community theater, and Ren Faire theater. I've been to auditions, and heard the kind of dreck those judges have to listen to. She can sing. And that was obvious from the first note.
If you want to understand the reaction, Minette Marrin has a good explanation of why people are responding so well to her.
Frankly, the things you're writing make you sound like a kook. Especially the tossing out charges when you admit you don't know what you're talking about. The world isn't owed by dark conspiracies, and it's often the case that things look good because they are good. If you don't feel happy for her, and for her getting to get her dream, well, that says lots about you, none of it good.
