Thanks for the link - the article there is a very interesting analysis of the decision, I'll have to keep an eye on that blog. The comment you cite does make a very good point, which hadn't occurred to me before. My own opposition to gun control tends to be from a practical perspective - as far as I've seen, prohibiting something doesn't do any good if there's enough demand for it anyway.

Yep, same reason I have issues with the war on drugs - you'd have thought that alcohol prohibition would have taught us this lesson, but it seems we're doomed to have to relearn it constantly.
