General Overview and Back-Story
Bryce is an only child, born on Blue Island, Illinois where he lived until shortly after he turned nine. He and his mother relocated to Ohio in July 2003 when, after nearly a year of fighting, his father, Keane, finally walked out on them the previous Christmas Eve. Bryce was just over eight and a half when his father left. Despite being raised from then on in a single parent home, Bryce and his mother are still quite well off and have never been confronted with monetary problems. In an effort to make sure that Bryce would have an adult present in his life as he grew up, his mother began working mainly from home once they’d moved to Ohio, and although she dates around, she’s never been in another lasting relationship. Bryce was seeing a counsellor regularly for the first six months after his father left, and he still holds a lot of anger towards Keane, both for abandoning him and for breaking his mother’s heart, but it’s no longer something that typically interferes with his everyday emotional state.
His parents put him in tap dancing classes when he was four years old, and he’s been dancing ever since. He ventured into hip-hop when he was six, and then into ballet and jazz when he was eight. After three more years, he transferred into contemporary ballet and made that his focus. He now considers himself a contemporary dancer, although he doesn’t take lessons during the school year because he finds that Vocal Adrenaline consumes the majority of his spare time. It became clear early on that dancing was going to be Bryce’s greatest passion, and for his twelfth birthday, his mother had their basement remodelled and an in-home dance studio was created for him. As hard as he rehearses with Vocal Adrenaline, and as much as he enjoys competitive dancing, he still makes good use of this studio, and can often be found down there perfecting his own choreography.
Occasionally, the desire to dance outside of rehearsal does abandon him, and he’ll often channel any excess energy through running. He also enjoys soccer and volleyball, although he no longer plays either of them competitively. When working through strong emotions, he has been known to dance himself to the point of making himself sick from physical exertion, though he’s been trying to get better about that habit. Despite his reliance on physical activity, he isn’t overly body conscious (although he IS quite vain) and honestly just enjoys being physically active.
First and foremost, Bryce considers himself a dancer, but he also has a good singing voice and has been playing guitar since he was thirteen. He enjoys writing his own music, and has a fair few original songs, but he’s never played his own music for anyone else before - not even his mother. He isn’t exactly Vocal Adrenaline’s strongest male vocalist, but he still gets recognition. However, his main priority is to help with the choreography, and he has been known to give one-on-one dance lessons to his fellow show choir members if they feel that they’re struggling to keep up.
Overall, he does like his teammates, although he often finds himself ‘going along’ with them - that is to say, he doesn’t exactly agree with everything that they do or with a lot of their views, but he tends to keep that to himself. Vocal Adrenaline is strong on loyalty, and he doesn’t want to deal with the drama of them doubting him, so instead of voicing his opposing views, he finds it easier to just nod and smile, and go along with the rest of the pack group. And maybe that makes him weak, but aside from not agreeing with some of the decisions, he fits pretty well with the majority of the VA kids and doesn’t want to mess that up because he doesn’t really have anyone else. Ever since he was forced to quit his soccer team due to bullying and harassment centered on his sexuality, the VA members and a select few friends from school and dance classes are all he really has.
However, this isn’t to say that he’s against all of their antics. He’s still fiercely proud and highly competitive, and sees no real issues with wreaking some havoc against rival show choirs. The Carmel/McKinley rivalry, especially, is more-or-less ingrained in his mind at this point. It’s just that things like, say, egging someone in the school parking lot aren’t exactly his favourite pastimes.
Sexuality
Relationship Status: Taken.
Bryce identifies as gay, although he has been known to experiment with girls from time to time and may occasionally refer to himself as bicurious (in the other direction). He’s never had romantic feelings towards a girl, though, nor does he expect to in the future. He came out to his mother when he was fourteen, and then to his other relatives and his peers shortly before he turned fifteen. He’s not a virgin, but had never been in a serious relationship prior to when he and Maël began seeing each other in January, 2011. It isn’t that he’s been opposed to dating (he’s actually a bit of a romantic at heart); he just has trust issues, courtesy of his father’s abandonment.
